Plan at a glance
The other island in the Gouqi–Shengshan system
Shengshan is connected to Gouqi by the Sanjiaojiang Bridge. Common arrival points include Shengshan and Gouqi's Ganxie area, followed by buses or taxis. This page focuses on Dongya Cliff, Houtouwan Village, the colourful houses and Dayuwan Beach; these places have separate entrances and tickets.
Allow half a day to two days. If you want Dongya Cliff's early coastal view, the slopes of Houtouwan Village and the village pier, stay at least one night. Prepare for a longer stay if boats or weather change.
Separate tickets and opening periods
The reference ticket for Dongya Cliff is CNY 50, with reference hours of about 04:00–17:30 in the high season and 04:30–17:00 in the low season. Houtouwan Village has a reference ticket of CNY 60 and commonly opens around 06:00–18:00. Dayuwan Beach and some colourful-house or viewpoint areas are open areas. Confirm each place separately at the entrance.

Dongya Cliff and the coast
Dongya Cliff is at the eastern end of Shengshan and has coastal cliffs, a walkway and a white lighthouse. It suits early sea views, cliff and rock scenery and a moderate coastal walk; the separate Dongya Cliff page in this group gives the shorter route options.
Wind, surface conditions and the open area affect the visit. Photography and natural-coast visitors may make it the main stop, but sunrise and a particular sea colour are not guaranteed.
Houtouwan Village and village scenery
Houtouwan Village is on Shengshan's northeastern side. Its entrance is high on the slope, and the path descends through old houses covered by vegetation. It requires steps and repeated slopes, so it suits visitors comfortable with walking, insects and older buildings. It is not a good choice for limited mobility or anyone uncomfortable on narrow high ground.
The colourful houses near Sizhoutang Pier are better for a short coastal stop. Dayuwan Beach is a place for rest and simple seaside activities. Moving between these places requires a vehicle; they are not one continuous village walk.
Who is it for?
Shengshan suits visitors interested in photography, walking, coastal scenery and fishing villages. Anyone who expects delivery food, shopping, frequent buses or extensive accessibility should consider Sijiao Island or reduce the number of stops.
Build your day
A half-day highlights route
Travel from your accommodation to Dongya Cliff early, complete the lighthouse and cliff walk, then return to rest. In the afternoon, go to Sizhoutang Pier for the colourful houses and finish with a short stop at Dayuwan Beach. Allow for a vehicle and waiting time between each place.
This suits visitors with only half a day or anyone who is not entering Houtouwan Village. If Dongya Cliff is scheduled for sunrise, keep the morning for rest rather than adding a long downhill route immediately afterward.
One or two days: Dongya Cliff plus Houtouwan
On the first afternoon, complete the pier, accommodation and a short village walk. On the second day, go to Dongya Cliff early, return to recover, then enter Houtouwan Village in the morning or around midday. If the return boat allows, visit the colourful houses and Dayuwan Beach later.
The steps in Houtouwan use energy. Confirm the exit and the vehicle before entering. If you leave the island that day, do not descend with the boat departure as your only time reference.
Get there
Reach Ganxie and Shengshan first
From Shanghai, boats usually leave from Shenjiawan Passenger Terminal; from Zhoushan's main island, boats can leave from Zhujiajian Wugongshi Pier. The destination may be Gouqi or Shengshan around Ganxie Pier. Confirm the port and whether a transfer is needed because sailings depend on weather.
There is no metro on the outer islands. Large luggage must travel from the pier through vehicles and slopes, so confirm the transfer area instead of estimating from a map alone.
Local transport
Buses run between Gouqi and Shengshan, but service can be infrequent. Taxis are the main way to reach Dongya Cliff and Houtouwan Village. There is no regular shared electric-bike system for visitors, so arrange longer trips in advance.
When moving between attractions, confirm both the drop-off point and the return. Houtouwan's exit and Dongya Cliff's entrance are different places and do not form a simple loop.
Know before you go
Energy and clothing
Houtouwan has continuous steps and slopes, insects are common, and Dongya Cliff is windy with potentially wet surfaces. Wear grippy shoes, and carry insect repellent, water and a light jacket. Reduce the number of stops according to the group's energy.
Old houses are unstable. Do not enter buildings or cross barriers. Stay on open routes, especially near the coast.
Boats and supplies
Island weather affects boats, sunrise visibility and the road experience at the same time. Confirm the return boat, and carry water and simple food because local food and daily supplies are limited.
Gouqi, Shengshan and each paid attraction have separate ticket arrangements. Dongya Cliff and Houtouwan do not share ticket hours, and the Sanjiaojiang Bridge only connects Gouqi and Shengshan.
