Chinese Character Museum is at No. 656, eastern Renmin Avenue, Beiguan District, Anyang. The main entrance faces the Character Gate on the square. Xuanwen Hall and Huiwen Hall are free; Bowen Hall, which focuses on interactive experiences, charges separately, with a reference price of about CNY 45. Reservations are usually not required on regular days, but the official WeChat account may be used on holidays or during heavy visitor periods.
From Tuesday to Sunday, Xuanwen Hall is open about 09:00–20:00 and Huiwen Hall about 09:00–17:00, with entry to Huiwen Hall stopping at 16:30. Monday is a partial opening day rather than a full closure: Xuanwen Hall's first and second floors and Huiwen Hall usually remain open, while Xuanwen Hall's third floor and Bowen Hall close.
How much time to allow
Allow 1.5–2 hours for a short route, prioritising the history of writing on Xuanwen Hall's second floor and the folk-culture displays on the first floor. A complete visit takes about 3–4 hours and adds the full Xuanwen Hall route and Huiwen Hall. The museum is large enough that visitors who want to study objects or join a guided visit should use the longer estimate.

Xuanwen Hall's second floor: writing history and bronzes
The second floor of Xuanwen Hall suits first-time visitors learning how Chinese writing developed. Inscribed turtle plastrons show some of the earliest written materials; inscribed bronze objects show how writing appeared on ritual vessels; and the lid of the Jia Bo Hu carries an inscription of eight lines and 33 characters.
The displays are information-dense, so visitors interested in writing, history or calligraphy can spend time with the case notes and inscriptions. An audio guide or live explanation helps connect oracle-bone writing, bronze inscriptions and later forms of Chinese script.
Xuanwen Hall's first floor, Huiwen Hall and the architecture
The first-floor Chinese character folk-culture exhibition uses riddles, couplets and character combinations to show how writing appears in daily life. It works well after the second floor for families. Huiwen Hall continues with folk-culture and calligraphy-related content and can be added to a complete visit.
The buildings use Shang-style architectural elements. The Character Gate on the square and the golden roofs are the easiest places to photograph, while the circular dome, inscription wall and exterior details in the entrance hall offer closer compositions. Pigeons, the creative shop and the café are optional conveniences, not fixed services.

1.5–2 hours: the Character Gate, Xuanwen Hall's second floor and folk culture
Start at the Character Gate on the square, then enter Xuanwen Hall to see the history of writing, inscribed turtle plastrons, inscribed bronzes and the Jia Bo Hu. Finish on the first floor with the Chinese character folk-culture exhibition. This order suits a short visit and moves from the core objects to the more interactive content.
On Monday, Xuanwen Hall's third floor and Bowen Hall are closed, so make the second-floor writing history, first-floor folk culture and Huiwen Hall the main route. Entry to Huiwen Hall stops at 16:30; Xuanwen Hall's late closing time of 20:00 does not apply to the whole museum.
3–4 hours: the complete Xuanwen Hall route and Huiwen Hall
With more time, start at the Character Gate and entrance hall, walk through Xuanwen Hall from the first floor to the third, then continue to Huiwen Hall. The second floor remains the main focus, while the third floor and Bowen Hall depend on the date and Monday policy.
Public guided visits are usually around 10:00 and 14:30, with the day's times determining the actual sessions. If a session fits your arrival, ask at the service desk and then continue through the exhibitions. For a full meal, use the Renmin Avenue area; Jiafeng Laoguanzi's Renmin Avenue branch is one option, subject to its opening time and menu that day.
Get there
Public transport and the entrance
Take Bus 3 or 47 from central Anyang and get off at the “Chinese Character Museum” stop, then walk to the main entrance. A taxi from Anyang East Railway Station takes about 15 minutes. Set the destination to “Chinese Character Museum”; the main entrance is opposite the Character Gate on the square.
The main route runs between Xuanwen Hall and Huiwen Hall, so a complete visit involves walking between buildings. If you visit it on the same day as Yinxu Archaeological Site, use the museum for background on the history of writing before continuing to Yinxu for Shang archaeological remains. Tickets and opening arrangements are separate.
Know before you go
Monday policy and entry times
Monday opens only part of the museum: Xuanwen Hall's third floor and Bowen Hall are closed. From Tuesday to Sunday, Xuanwen Hall stays open later, but entry to Huiwen Hall still stops at 16:30. For the complete collection of halls, avoid Monday or visit Huiwen Hall earlier in the afternoon.
Free admission usually uses an ID card at the entrance, while holidays or heavy visitor periods may require a reservation. Bowen Hall's paid interactive experience and the day's exhibition openings are handled separately from the free main halls.
Guides and visitor services
The second floor contains many inscriptions and object details, so an audio guide or live explanation can make the visit easier to follow than reading only the case labels. Public sessions are usually around 10:00 and 14:30, but times and availability can change. The creative shop, café and square pigeons are occasional conveniences rather than guaranteed services.
