Tickets, location and opening hours

Anyang Museum is at No. 436, eastern Wenming Avenue, Anyang. The main entrance is at the front of the building. Admission is free, reservations are usually not required, and visitors enter with an ID card. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00–17:00 and closed on Mondays except during statutory public holidays.

The museum's main line is the “Yin and Ye Through the Ages” historical exhibition, which runs from prehistory to the Ming and Qing periods. It suits visitors who want an overview of Anyang before visiting Yinxu or another archaeological site. Allow about 1–1.5 hours for a short visit or 2–3 hours for the complete route.

Choose your visit

The second-floor “Yin and Ye Through the Ages” exhibition

The second-floor “Yin and Ye Through the Ages” exhibition has seven sections and suits first-time visitors who want a timeline of Anyang's history. On a short visit, focus on the Shang-period oracle bones and bronze objects and the Northern Dynasties Ye City ceremonial figurines.

The exhibition covers Anyang's development from prehistory to the Qing period, with the emphasis on chronology and collection objects. Anyang Museum covers local history, Chinese Character Museum focuses on the development of writing, and Yinxu provides the Shang archaeological setting; choose among them by subject.

Third-floor special exhibitions

With more time, go to the third floor and choose among “Silk Road Echoes,” “Stone Carving Art” and special exhibitions related to objects returned from overseas from the Longmen Grottoes. Special exhibitions and object displays can change, so use the halls open on the day as the basis for the route.

The indoor setting works well for a half-day cultural visit. The building exterior, Shang bronze objects and Northern Dynasties figurines are suitable photography subjects; the third-floor galleries are darker, so follow the gallery rules when photographing stone carvings and Buddhist figures.

Build your day

1–1.5 hours: the second-floor highlights

After entering, go directly to the second floor. Start with the Shang section of “Yin and Ye Through the Ages,” continue to the Northern Dynasties Ye City section, and use the remaining time for other cases. This route covers the two most useful historical anchors for a short visit.

If this is your first visit to Anyang, put the museum before Yinxu: build a general timeline of Anyang and its dynasties here, then continue to Yinxu Archaeological Site for Shang remains and excavated objects. If you also want the history of writing, add Chinese Character Museum; each venue covers a different subject.

2–3 hours: the history exhibition and a special exhibition

For the complete route, start with “Yin and Ye Through the Ages” on the second floor and follow the historical sequence, then go to the third floor for a Silk Road, stone-carving or returned-Longmen-Grottoes exhibition related to what is open that day. The special-exhibition schedule can change, so the open galleries matter more than a fixed title.

Free guided visits are usually around 10:00 and 15:00, concentrated in the first and second exhibition halls, and last about 1.5–2 hours. If you want one, fit the session into the second-floor route and decide afterward whether to continue to the third-floor exhibitions.

Get there

Public transport and parking

Take Bus 11, 12, 16 or 36 and get off at the “City Library” stop, then walk to the museum. The museum has its own car park, and parking is relatively convenient. Set the destination to “Anyang Museum” and enter from the front of the building.

The museum is in the city and works best as a separate cultural stop. Yuan Lin Mausoleum, Tianning Temple and Wenfeng Pagoda can form another city-centre historic route, while this museum keeps its own 1–3-hour indoor visit rhythm.

Know before you go

Opening days and guided visits

The museum is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00–17:00; holiday arrangements follow the notice for the day. Free guided visits are usually around 10:00 and 15:00, last about 1.5–2 hours and concentrate in the first and second halls. Ask in the first or second hall or at the service desk after entering.

Distinguishing Anyang Museum from other cultural venues

Anyang Museum covers local history, with “Yin and Ye Through the Ages” as its main line; Chinese Character Museum focuses on the development of writing; Yinxu places Shang remains, tombs and excavated objects in their archaeological setting. Start with Anyang Museum for a timeline, then choose Yinxu or Chinese Character Museum according to your interests.

The museum has an oracle-bone coffee shop and a creative-products area, but opening and product selection may change. For a full meal, return to the city for Anyang-style food; Jiafeng Laoguanzi's Tiexi Road branch and Dong Chuzi Anyang Local Cuisine are options, subject to their opening arrangements that day.
