The umbrella-shaped tower and eight-sided brick carvings

Wenfeng Pagoda was built during the Later Zhou period of the Five Dynasties. Its body is wider toward the top and has an umbrella-like profile. Each of the eight sides carries brick carvings depicting Buddhist stories, which suit visitors interested in historic architecture, Buddhist art and architectural photography.

The lotus base, tower body and finial reflect different architectural traditions. Walk around the tower to view each side, keeping the distance and protection boundary allowed on site.

Tianning Temple's courtyards

Wenfeng Pagoda stands inside Tianning Temple, and buildings such as the Hall of Heavenly Kings can be added to a complete route. Visitors interested in old-city culture, historic pagodas and a quiet walk can make it one stop in a half-day city itinerary.

Plan on not climbing the pagoda. Recent visitor information mostly indicates that climbing is unavailable, although older information differs. If climbing is the main purpose of your visit, confirm the status with the site before travelling; the day's management arrangement applies on arrival.

Build your day

30–45 minutes: walk around the pagoda and view the carvings

Enter through Tianning Temple's main entrance, go directly to the pagoda, walk clockwise around the tower to view the eight sides of brick carvings, and finish with photographs in the open space in front. This short route focuses on the umbrella-shaped profile and Buddhist story carvings.

Plan the route without climbing and do not count climbing time. Return to Wenfeng North Street through the main entrance, then continue on foot through the old city or move to the next stop.

1–1.5 hours: Wenfeng Pagoda and the temple buildings

Walk around the pagoda first, then visit the Hall of Heavenly Kings and other temple buildings. With more time, return to the front of the pagoda to study the proportions of the tower body and finial from a low angle. Side light can help reveal the relief details; follow the site's photography rules.

Wenfeng Pagoda can be combined with Cangxiang Street, the Bell Tower and Beidajie Snack Street as an old-city walking route. These are separate places, with their own food and opening arrangements.

Get there

Buses and driving

Take Bus 1, 3 or 11 and get off at the “Wenfeng Pagoda” or “Tianning Temple” stop, then walk to the entrance. A paid car park is available near Tianning Temple, but spaces are limited and the old-city roads are narrow.

Set the destination to “Tianning Temple” or “Wenfeng Pagoda.” On Wenfeng North Street, enter through the main gate with the temple sign. Public transport suits short old-city movements; parking may take extra time during busy periods.

Know before you go

Climbing expectations and conservation

Most recent visitor information indicates that climbing is unavailable for safety reasons, although some older information mentions access. Plan for no climbing; if the on-site status differs, follow the day's management arrangement and do not cross closed areas.

Admission is CNY 20, students and teachers receive half-price admission with the required certificate, and opening hours are about 08:30–18:00. The brick carvings and temple buildings are protected features, so keep the required distance and do not touch the carvings.
