Choose your visit

The old opera house and caisson ceiling

The old opera house is a main highlight. From the audience area, look at the stage, timber structure, and layered caisson ceiling (藻井). If the second-floor gallery is open, it offers a view down into the opera house. Stay within the areas open to visitors.

The Zhaozhong Shrine and exhibition rooms

The exhibition rooms in Zhaozhong Shrine add background on the Huai Army and work well after a visit to the opera house. The displays focus on the buildings and their history. Check the exhibition guide at the entrance and choose how much time to spend in each room.

Gable walls and the western garden

Brick lanes, stepped gable walls, brick carvings, and painted details show the character of the courtyards. The western garden has a rockery, pond, and pavilions, with places to rest after the main route. Turns in the lanes and doorways reveal how the courtyards are arranged.

Build your day

Main route: about 1 hour

Enter from Xinghua Road and pass through the main gate and ceremonial gate to the old opera house. Allow time to see the stage and ceiling, then visit the Zhaozhong Shrine exhibition rooms and continue west to the garden. The main spaces take about 1 hour; allow longer for a guided visit or temporary exhibition.

A slower visit: about 2 hours

Follow the main route, spending longer on the opera house's beams and caisson ceiling, the shrine's exhibition rooms, and the brick lanes leading to the western garden. Check photography rules before taking pictures. Go upstairs only if the second-floor gallery is open.

A half-day walk to three cultural sites

Visit the Huai Army Office first, then walk about 1 km (17 minutes) to the Zhili Governor-General's Office and about 200 m (5 minutes) to the Ancient Lotus Pond. Each site has a separate ticket, entrance, and closing time. The 3–4-hour estimate is for all three stops, not the Huai Army Office alone.

Get there

Buses and Baoding Railway Station

In the city, take bus 1, 4, 7, 8, 12, 19, 27, 66, or 102 to Baobai Department Store (保百大楼), then walk 5–8 minutes to the Xinghua Road entrance. You can take a taxi from Baoding Railway Station; the fare depends on your pickup point and traffic.

Driving and parking

There is a multi-level parking garage across from the site. The reference parking rate is CNY 5 per hour, and spaces can be limited on holidays. Check the garage entrance and opening hours when you arrive, then follow the parking signs back to your car.

Know before you go

Closures, maintenance, and photography

The site is normally closed on Mondays; holiday schedules may differ, and maintenance can cause temporary closures. Before you set out, call 0312-5915860 or check the official information.

Do not use flash in the exhibition rooms. Access to the opera house interior, second-floor gallery, and some rooms depends on on-site arrangements. Ask staff before taking photos and stay out of closed areas.

Food and nearby sites

Baobai Department Store and small restaurants in the surrounding streets offer places to eat before or after your visit. Check current opening hours, prices, and menus. The Ancient Lotus Pond and Zhili Governor-General's Office are within walking distance, but each has its own hours and ticket.

Photo positions and light

On a sunny day, look for light entering the opera house through its high windows around midday. From an area that does not block the way, you can photograph the ceiling and stage from below. Lower afternoon light can bring out the texture of the brick walls and stepped gables. Follow indoor photography rules.

The curved garden bridge frames reflections in the pond, while the moon gate frames the courtyard beyond. If the gallery or opera house is closed, photograph the exterior from an open area.
