Laojun Hall and the Laozi Culture Museum

Laojun Hall is the main building, with a statue of Laozi inside. From the entrance square, you can see the hall and the layout along the central axis fairly clearly. The Laozi Culture Museum introduces Laozi's life, ideas from the Dao De Jing and related exhibits, including the “贼鼎” displayed in the museum; the story behind it can be read in the on-site description. It suits visitors interested in Daoist culture and ancient thought.

If you enjoy architectural photography, the entrance square offers a broad view of the hall and the central axis. Inside the hall and museum, follow the opening signs and photography rules in place that day.

Jiulong Well, Liuxing Garden and different claims about Laozi's hometown

Jiulong Well and Liuxing Garden are the site's most distinctive remains. Local tradition says that nine dragons spouted water to bathe Laozi when he was born, while Liuxing Garden is linked to the story of a meteor falling at the time of his birth. These stories are best understood as local legends and commemorative narratives associated with Tianjing Palace.

There are different claims about Laozi's hometown, with Woyang as one location and Luyi in Henan as another. Both have supporting historical records and archaeological evidence. At Tianjing Palace, the main focus can be the memorial buildings, remains and garden setting associated with Laozi culture.

Build your day

The 1.5-hour highlights route

Enter through the “天下道源” gateway, visit the Laozi Culture Museum first, then follow the central axis to Laojun Hall. Continue to Jiulong Well and finish at the Liuxing Garden site. The museum, Laojun Hall and other religious spaces may have different opening areas, so follow the on-site directions for the day.

This route brings the exhibits, main building and legendary remains into one visit. The well is a good place to photograph the well railings and greenery, while the square in front of Laojun Hall gives a wider view of the architecture.

The 40-minute quick route

With limited time, enter through the gateway, follow the central axis to Laojun Hall, then continue to Jiulong Well for a short photo stop before leaving through the available exit. This route focuses on the main building and one historic site, and suits visitors treating Tianjing Palace as one stop on a Woyang outing.

Tianjing Palace is about 60 km from downtown Bozhou, so even the short route needs time for the return journey. Woyang's gan kou mian and Yimen smoked beef are local meal options in the county seat; opening hours depend on the day.

Get there

High-speed rail, coaches and the final connection

Bozhou currently has no metro. From Bozhou South Railway Station, take a coach or taxi to Woyang County, then continue by local transport to Zhengdian Village in Tianjing Palace Subdistrict. The final leg from the county seat and the return connection need to be arranged around the services and vehicle availability on the day.

Tianjing Palace is outside walking range from downtown Bozhou, so it suits a half-day or full-day Woyang outing. If driving, set the destination to “Tianjing Palace”; the site has a car park, with spaces and charges subject to the day's conditions.

Return travel and other Woyang stops

If you plan to return to Bozhou the same day, allow time for the journey there, the visit and the trip back to Woyang County or Bozhou. Fanli Tomb and Wangren Old Street are other Woyang heritage stops that can be considered for the same county itinerary; check their distances and opening conditions before setting out.

Know before you go

Legends and same-day access

The stories of nine dragons spouting water and a meteor falling are part of the legends associated with Tianjing Palace. Jiulong Well and Liuxing Garden are best viewed through the combination of their remains, the surrounding landscape and these local stories. The opening areas of Laojun Hall, the Laozi Culture Museum and other religious spaces may differ, so read the on-site signs before entering.

Tianjing Palace presents one local form of memorializing Laozi culture. The Laozi hometown claim has different versions involving Woyang and Luyi in Henan; at the site, visitors can focus on the memorial architecture, remains and garden setting.
