Temple halls, Yuanhua Caotang and the herb garden

Huazu Temple is at No. 12 Yong'an Street in Qiaocheng District. It is a temple and former-residence complex built to commemorate Hua Tuo. The entrance is a green-brick gate with a pair of Ming-dynasty stone lions moved from elsewhere. Inside are the main hall, Yuanhua Caotang (元化草堂), an herb garden, a medicine-washing pool and the Huatuo Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Museum. The setting is a quiet courtyard complex.

Allow about 1–1.5 hours for the complete visit, or about 30–45 minutes for the main areas. The standard reference ticket price is CNY 30, and reference hours are 09:00–17:30. Reservations are usually not required; temporary free-admission or discount activities, purchase methods and areas open to visitors follow the arrangement on the day.

From the main hall to Yuanhua Caotang

After entering, see the main hall and the side gates marked “Huichun” (回春) and “Jishi” (济世), then continue to Yuanhua Caotang. Yuanhua Caotang is often described here as a place associated with Hua Tuo's medical work and teaching; this connection has commemorative and legendary elements. The building itself has a timber structure and painted details.

If you enjoy historic architecture and stories about historical figures, look at the layers of the compound through its gates, walls and covered corridors. The courtyard is modest in scale, with the former-residence space, herb garden and traditional Chinese medicine displays forming the main focus.

The herb garden and TCM museum

The rear herb garden contains peonies, mint, datura and other medicinal plants, usually with labels giving their names and uses. Observe the leaves, flowers and labels; some garden areas may have visitor restrictions, so follow the on-site opening signs when entering.

The Huatuo Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Museum works well alongside the garden, linking the plants with the TCM information in the displays. The venue may offer classes in Wuqinxi (五禽戏), the Five-Animal Exercises; times and whether they are free follow the day's arrangement. The medicinal-gourd sculpture by the pond, labelled plants and historic corridors are all suitable for photos.

Build your day

The complete courtyard route: about 1–1.5 hours

Enter through the green-brick gate, see the Ming stone lions, main hall and the “Huichun” and “Jishi” side gates, then continue to Yuanhua Caotang. From there, go to the rear herb garden and medicine-washing pool, and finish at the Huatuo Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Museum. This order connects the buildings, former residence, plants and exhibits in one route.

If there is a Five-Animal Exercises class or another activity that day, you can join after seeing the main exhibition areas. Activity times and charges follow the day's arrangement.

The short route: about 30–45 minutes

With limited time, follow this order: gate → main hall → rear herb garden → museum. Focus on the stone lions, medicinal-plant labels and TCM displays, then take a few courtyard photos by the medicinal-gourd sculpture or historic corridors before leaving.

Get there

Bus, cycling and walking

Bozhou currently has no metro. You can take a city bus to No. 12 Yong'an Street, or change locally and use a shared e-bike. If driving, set the destination to “Huatuo Square,” park there and walk to Huazu Temple; the old lanes are mainly for walking.

Huazu Temple is in an old-city area with several nearby attractions, so it can be visited on the same day as Cao Cao Underground Military Tunnel, Huaxi Theatre, Nanjing Lane Money House and Bozhou Old Street. Huazu Temple has its own gate and ticketing, and the nearby attractions also require separate entry.
