Brick carving, wood carving and the iron flagpoles

The main details are the brick carvings on the gate, the wood carvings on the theatre and the iron flagpoles in front. The brick carvings include stories such as “Guo Ziyi Paying Birthday Respects,” while the wood carvings draw on scenes from works such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The iron flagpoles are a major feature of the entrance square; the reference weight given for them is about 15 metric tons.

Visitors interested in historic buildings, carving and merchant guildhall history should see the courtyards and the Guandi and Yuefei temple halls on both sides. A guide can help identify the figures and stories in the carvings, but the site can also be visited independently.

Shadow puppetry and other activities follow the day's schedule

The venue may offer shadow-puppet performances or other activities. If there is a suitable show that day, you can watch it as part of the visit; show times and charges follow the arrangement announced on the day.

Build your day

The building route: about 1–1.5 hours

Enter through the gate marked “Grand Guandi Temple.” Start with the iron flagpoles in the entrance square, then examine the brick carvings on the gate. Inside the compound, walk around to the front of Huaxi Theatre to see the wood carvings, then visit the Guandi and Yuefei temple halls on the east and west sides.

The 30-minute highlights route

With limited time, follow this order: entrance-square iron flagpoles → gate brick carvings → theatre wood carvings. Shadow-puppet show times can change, so whether to watch depends on the performance time announced that day. You can ask about guide services after entering.

Get there

Bus, cycling and parking

Bozhou currently has no metro. You can use buses such as Routes 1 and 21 to reach the North Gate Historic District, or change buses in the city and use a shared electric bicycle. Bus services should be checked for the day of travel. If driving, set the destination to “Shupi Keng Parking Lot”; parking around the attraction depends on the day's arrangement.

Huaxi Theatre, Cao Cao Underground Military Tunnel, Nanjing Lane Money House and Bozhou Old Street are in the same old-city walking area. After leaving the theatre, you can continue through the Old Street, but each paid attraction has its own entrance and ticket arrangements.

Know before you go

Photography, guides and extra activities

The brick and wood carvings contain many small details, so follow the venue's photography rules. Light around 15:00–16:00 is usually better for seeing the details on the gate, although weather and obstructions can affect the view.

The visit is not very long, and whether to buy a guide service depends on your interest in the carving stories and guildhall history. Shadow-puppet performances and other activities may cost extra; ask about the activity and charge before paying or entering.
