What kind of visit is this?
Baquan Gorge is in Daxiagu Town, Huguan County, and is the core scenic area of Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon. A full route combines a High Gorge Lake cruise, about 2 km of canyon trails, a switchback cableway, and a 208-metre cliff elevator. A first visit usually takes about 4–5 hours.
Tickets and entry times
Baquan Gorge currently uses the RMB 100 joint ticket for Baquan Gorge, Hongdou Gorge, and Qinglong Gorge, valid for three days; confirm at purchase whether a Baquan Gorge-only ticket is available. In the busy season, opening hours are usually 07:00–16:30, with last entry at 16:00. Advance booking through the “Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon Baquan Gorge” WeChat account is required, and booking 1–2 days ahead is advisable during public holidays.

Choose your visit
Water and canyon trails
High Gorge Lake is the starting point for the water section. The boat travels between red cliffs before connecting with about 2 km of trail, where you can see the Heart of Baquan and Huxue Dongtian. Choose Route A or B if you want to include the canyon walk and see the gorge up close.
High views and signature rides
The switchback cableway crosses 13 mountain ridges, while Sky City is a 208-metre cliff elevator. After reaching the upper section, you can also see Yuhuang Pavilion, Beitian Gate, and the wider canyon panorama. There are many steps at Baquan Gorge, so Route B is worth considering for older visitors or children; wheelchairs and strollers are not suitable for the full route.
When to go
The light is softer in the morning and late afternoon, making the layers of the Heart of Baquan, the boat section, and the cableway views easier to see. After rain or in mist, visibility and trail slipperiness can change at the same time. If photography is a priority, Route B’s high viewpoints and downhill trail are easier to follow in sequence, but the day’s operating conditions and safety come first.
Build your day
Route A: water first, then the heights
Enter through the East Gate and take the sightseeing vehicle through the Time Tunnel to High Gorge Lake. After the boat ride, walk about 2 km along the canyon trail, stopping at the Heart of Baquan and Huxue Dongtian. Then take the switchback cableway uphill, pass Yuhuang Pavilion, Beitian Gate, and Sky City, and descend by the 208-metre cliff elevator before taking the sightseeing vehicle back. The route takes about 4–5 hours; the trail climbs gradually and suits first-time visitors who want the full water-and-mountain experience.
Route B: go up first, then walk downhill
After taking the sightseeing vehicle from the entrance, ride the cliff elevator uphill. For an additional RMB 20, the Sky Bus can replace about 40 minutes of climbing. Continue to the Yuhuang Pavilion area, take the switchback cableway down, and walk about 2 km downhill. After the downhill canyon trail, take the boat across High Gorge Lake. After leaving the boat, continue through the Time Tunnel and follow the sightseeing-vehicle connection back to the exit. The route takes about 4 hours, puts less strain on the knees, and may avoid part of the Route A crowds.
How to handle queues
During public holidays, the cableway, elevator, and sightseeing vehicle may each have queues of 1–2 hours. Arriving at the East Gate before 07:00 gives you a better chance of reducing the wait. If you want to avoid ride queues, ask at the entrance which walking alternatives are operating; do not abandon a section halfway and then try to reverse the route.
Get there
Drive to the East Gate
Navigate to “太行山大峡谷八泉峡景区东门” (Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon Baquan Gorge Scenic Area East Gate). P1 is mainly for tour buses, while P2 and P3 are for passenger cars. Parking is about RMB 10 per visit, followed by a free shuttle to the scenic-area gate. Electric vehicles are currently free to park, but confirm the charge arrangement on site.
From Changzhi East Railway Station
From Changzhi East Railway Station, you can carpool or take a direct tourist shuttle; the journey takes about 1.5 hours. Public-transport schedules depend on the date, so use Baquan Gorge’s East Gate and visitor centre as your navigation targets after arrival. Baquan Gorge, Hongdou Gorge, and Qinglong Gorge have separate entrances.
Know before you go
Transport pass and concession rules
The RMB 180 transport pass includes the sightseeing vehicle, boat, switchback cableway, and Sky City cliff elevator; the Sky Bus costs an additional RMB 20. Concession rules use different age and height thresholds, so check the ticket price, booking requirements, last-entry time, and transport-pass contents against the rules announced that day.
Walking, photography, and food
There are many steps in the gorge, so the full route is unsuitable for wheelchairs, strollers, or visitors who need continuous step-free access. Good grip matters more than finding the perfect photo spot. The boat offers views of reflections on High Gorge Lake, the Heart of Baquan works well for low-angle photos, and the cableway and elevator provide higher views of the mountains; do not stop on narrow trails and block other visitors.
There are farmhouse restaurants around Qiaoshang Township, including Wang Xiaoer’s Courtyard for free-range chicken. Food inside the scenic area may cost more, so confirm the price and portion size before ordering. Under the current rules, pets are not allowed in Baquan Gorge; check the day’s policy before travelling with one.
