Plan at a glance
Spend a day on the gorge and the former arms factory site
Huangyadong is in Shangchiyu Village, Licheng County, Changzhi. The visit combines the Wenggelang red-rock gorge with Huangyadong and the former arms factory site. The area is large: allow about 4–5 hours for the complete lower-effort loop, or about 2–3 hours for the gorge-only short route. The shorter option is easier to manage with older visitors or a limited schedule.
Tickets and opening periods
Admission is around RMB 90–100, while the transport package is around RMB 150–190 and usually needs to be purchased online in advance. In the busy season, the usual hours are 08:00–17:30; the low-season schedule changes. Confirm the admission, transport-package inclusions, and last-entry time before departure rather than budgeting from a single price.

Wenggelang Grand Canyon
Wenggelang is the natural centre of the scenic area, with red rock walls on both sides, a stream on the valley floor, and trails and steps connecting the main viewpoints. Morning or post-rain mist may fill the gorge, while midday gives stronger light and shade. The ground can be slippery after rain, so do not stop in narrow bends for photos.
Huangyadong and the former arms factory site
The Huangyadong and former arms factory sections retain production workshops, stone-built sentry posts, and gun emplacements. They suit visitors who want to combine mountain scenery with wartime industrial heritage from the Second Sino-Japanese War period. The areas open to visitors and the guiding arrangements follow the scenic area’s schedule that day.
High views and internal transport
The Wufutai and Shantuo Xian Village areas look over the red mountains, while the Panlong Trail leads towards cliffs and the deep valley. Sightseeing vehicles, armoured-vehicle shuttles, cable cars, and the vertical elevator serve different sections. Check the ticket face and the operating arrangements to see which rides are included in the transport package.
Build your day
Full route: the gorge first, then the historic site
From the Visitor Centre, take the sightseeing vehicle to Taihang Gate Square. Walk through Wenggelang Grand Canyon, then at Sancha take the armoured-vehicle shuttle, around RMB 25 per person, towards Huangyadong and the former arms factory site. After the visit, return to Sancha and follow the day’s route by cable car, vertical elevator, and sightseeing vehicle back to the Visitor Centre. Allow about 4–5 hours; start in the Huangyadong direction at Sancha and expect more downhill walking and rides in the second half.
Short route: Wenggelang only
When time is limited, take the sightseeing vehicle from the Visitor Centre to Taihang Gate Square, walk into Wenggelang Grand Canyon, and return by the same route. Allow about 2–3 hours. This option does not include Huangyadong, the former arms factory site, or the later internal-transport sections, so check whether the ticket is still sold as one combined product before choosing it.
Queues and last services
During public holidays, the cable car, elevator, and sightseeing vehicle may have queues, adding to the 4–5-hour full route. At Sancha, confirm the direction of the armoured-vehicle shuttle, cable car, and elevator, as well as their last services. If a section is suspended, ask on site how to return to the Visitor Centre.
Get there
Drive to the Visitor Centre
Navigate to “黄崖洞文化旅游区” (Huangyadong Cultural Tourism Area). There is a car park beside the Visitor Centre, with parking around RMB 10 per visit. The scenic area is around Shangchiyu Village in Licheng County; after entering the mountain road, follow the signs to the Visitor Centre. Its parking and internal transport are separate from those at Tongtian Gorge and Chibi Hanging Waterfall.
Public transport
From Changzhi East Railway Station, you can take a tourist shuttle or carpool. Direct buses from Changzhi Coach Station usually run only on weekends and public holidays. Services and return times are not stable, so confirm the return before travelling by public transport; the scenic-area sightseeing vehicle is not a city shuttle.
Know before you go
Package contents and ride prices
The transport package is around RMB 150–190 and generally covers rides such as the sightseeing vehicle, cable car, and vertical elevator. The armoured-vehicle shuttle is around RMB 25 per person. When buying a ticket, confirm separately whether Wenggelang, the historic site, the armoured-vehicle shuttle, and the return transport are included; prices, rides, and concession thresholds may change.
Trails and safety
Even with the transport options, the Wenggelang and historic-site sections include steps, climbs, and cliffside trails. The full route is unsuitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Trails become slippery after rain; do not lean over the Panlong Trail or canyon edges, and do not stop there to take photos. The return drive through this remote mountain area is long, so avoid entering the deeper sections close to last entry.
Photography and nearby food
The wooden trail in Wenggelang is good for red-rock and narrow-gorge views, Wufutai and Shantuo Xian Village look over the valley, and the former arms factory site offers views of workshops, sentry posts, and gun emplacements. Farmhouse restaurants are available nearby, including Hongyuan Restaurant. Opening hours and prices are not consistent, so if you need to catch internal transport or a return bus, confirm how long the meal will take.
