Plan at a glance
A one-day gorge visit
Tongtian Gorge is in Hongtiguan Township, Pingshun County. Enter through the Tongtian Gorge Visitor Centre and choose among the Qianchijian boat ride, the Tianjie Cableway, the Xianren Peak Sky Terrace, and a group of waterfalls. The lighter route takes about 3–4 hours, while the highlights route takes about 4–5 hours. It suits a half-day or full-day visit of its own and is not covered by the Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon joint ticket.
Tickets and opening periods
The package is usually around RMB 169, including admission, the boat ride, sightseeing vehicle, and return cableway. In the busy season from April to October, the usual hours are 08:00–17:30; the schedule changes during the November–March low season. Book through Tongtian Gorge’s official channel, and note that some tickets need to be purchased about one hour in advance. Confirm the price and hours before departure.

Choose your visit
Water and waterfalls
The Qianchijian boat travels across the gorge, with cliffs rising on both sides. Along the trails, you can also see the Three-Tier Waterfall, Tongtian Waterfall, and Turtle Lake. Water and spray are usually more pronounced in summer, while rain can also make the walkways slippery.
Xianren Peak and the Sky Terrace
The Tianjie Cableway crosses the deep valley, and the 360-degree circular Sky Terrace around Xianren Peak provides elevated views over the gorge. Morning and post-rain mist can reduce visibility. Follow the capacity limits and safety instructions at the glass viewing areas.
Monkey Village
At Monkey Village, wild macaques may be active in the trees and on the rocks, and they may approach visitors, so keep personal belongings secure. Do not feed, tease, or deliberately approach them. If monkey-related activities are offered, follow that day’s notice rather than expecting a regular show.
For the nearby free village-and-waterfall route, see Hongni Village.
Build your day
Route A: walk the sights first, then climb to Xianren Peak
Enter through the Visitor Centre and first walk through Monkey Village, past the Three-Tier Waterfall and Turtle Lake. Continue to Qianchijian for the boat ride, pass through Tongtian Cave, and then take the cableway uphill to visit Xianren Peak and the Sky Terrace. Finally, take the cableway down and return by sightseeing vehicle. Allow about 4–5 hours; this route keeps both the walking and the high viewpoints, and suits first-time visitors in good physical condition.
Route B: a lighter order with more rides
Take the sightseeing vehicle uphill from the entrance, then ride the cableway to Xianren Peak and the Sky Terrace before taking the cableway down. Continue to Qianchijian for the boat ride, pass through Tongtian Cave, and return by sightseeing vehicle. Allow about 3–4 hours. This route relies more heavily on transport and suits older visitors, children, or anyone with limited stamina.
Ride order and queues
The boat, cableway, and sightseeing vehicle operate in an on-site sequence, and popular rides may have queues of more than 30 minutes during public holidays. Ask about the day’s route after entering so you do not make unnecessary back-and-forth trips between the boat and cableway. Route A needs enough time for the waterfalls and walking sections; Route B shortens some of the walking-based highlights.
Get there
Navigate to the Visitor Centre
For driving, navigate to “山西通天峡景区游客中心” (Shanxi Tongtian Gorge Scenic Area Visitor Centre). The car park is near the entrance, with parking around RMB 10 per day. From Changzhi East Railway Station, you can take a holiday tourist shuttle or carpool; the one-way journey is about 1.5 hours. The direct shuttle requires advance booking, and weekday services should be checked by date.
Combine it with Hongni Village on the same day
Hongni Village is near Tongtian Gorge, about 4.5 km away or about a 12-minute drive. They can be visited on the same day, but use separate parking points and separate walking routes. Tongtian Gorge has its own package ticket, while Hongni Village is free; the two do not share boats, cableways, parking, or opening hours.
Know before you go
Season and weather
April to October usually offers stronger water views and greener gorge scenery. Ice formations may appear from December to February, but low-season hours and the status of the boat, cableway, and trails should be confirmed before departure. Rain and fog can reduce visibility from the Sky Terrace, while spray increases near the waterfalls; wear shoes with good grip and protect your phone.
Physical effort, photography, and on-site rules
From the Qianchijian boat, a front or window seat offers views across the gorge. The Three-Tier Waterfall is a good place to photograph the spray, while the Sky Terrace gives an overhead perspective; do not stop in narrow walkways or at the boat entrance. Both routes include walking, steps, and high sections, so check your stamina before choosing Route A. In the monkey area, stay within the marked boundary and do not approach the animals for a photo.
Supplies and nearby food
Farmhouse food and noodles are the main options near the scenic area, and Jucailou Noodle House is in Hongni Village. If you visit both places on the same day, check the last transport services and parking positions separately before arranging a meal or the drive back to Changzhi. Tongtian Gorge requires its own ticket, while Hongni Village follows its free-entry arrangement.
