Location, tickets and opening
Phoenix Tianchi is a natural volcanic-crater lake near the summit of Wudong Mountain in Fenghuang Town, at around 1,325 metres. Adult admission is 40 CNY and children’s admission is 20 CNY; children below 1.2 metres enter free.
The area is open 24 hours and suits sunrise viewing and camping, although mountain shops are not open overnight. Parking is tighter during holidays, tea season and the azalea flowering period.

2–3 hours: lake and viewpoint
Walk about 30 minutes from the ticket gate to the Tianchi camping area and viewing platform, then enjoy the lake, cloud views and grassland before descending.
Overnight: sunrise and cloud sea
Arrive in the afternoon, camp or stay in a guesthouse, watch sunset, then leave around 04:00 for the sunrise platform and wait for sunrise at roughly 05:30.
Tea-garden route
Continue from Tianchi to Wudong Village and Qipan Village tea gardens, then return downhill for local food.
Build your day
Use daytime for the lake, grassland and rocks
The Tianchi platform is the main place for cloud-sea and sunrise views. The surrounding grassland and rock formations suit easy walking when weather and visibility allow.
Make night safety the priority
At night, use the stone steps rather than potentially slippery boardwalks. Sort out toilets, drinking water and supplies before going higher, as facilities are limited around the summit.
Get there
Drive or use the visitor bus
Drive to Phoenix Tianchi Parking Lot only if comfortable on narrow, winding mountain roads. New drivers are better served by the visitor bus from the transfer centre; shared cars from Chaozhou or Shantou are another option.
Know before you go
Warm clothing, camping and supplies
Sunrise temperatures can be 5–10°C lower than in town. Bring warm outerwear, a hat, gloves and waterproof or moisture-resistant camping equipment. First-time campers can use the car-park area, then walk up lightly before dawn.
Crowds and weather
Arriving around 15:00–16:00 on weekends can avoid part of the traffic. Bring water, snacks, a headlamp and a power bank; do not rely on overnight shops.
