Plan at a glance

A one-way scenic drive

Baili Sky Road runs through Datan Town, Fengning Manchu Autonomous County, Chengde, for about 100 km at an average elevation of nearly 1,800 m. Traffic follows a south-to-north route. Set your navigation destination to “Baili Sky Road South Entrance”; a roadside viewpoint or the northern exit is not an entrance.

Tickets and opening season

The reference ticket price is CNY 120. Children aged 6–18, students and visitors over 60 are eligible for a half-price ticket at CNY 60; visitors over 70 and children under 6 enter free. The ticket allows repeat entry for three days. Tickets can be purchased on site or online; advance reservations are not required.

How much time to allow

Allow about 1.5–2 hours for a quick drive to the high points and main viewpoints, or 3–4 hours for a fuller route with several stops. The road is generally open from early June to early October, 08:00–18:00 each day. Do not plan on normal access outside this seasonal window.

Tickets and visit details

Choose your visit

Wide plateau views from Tiandi T-Stage

Tiandi T-Stage (天地T台), at 1,982 m, is the highest point on the route, with views across the grassland and wind turbines. The afternoon light is softer for wide landscape photos. Winds are stronger at this elevation; park safely and stay off the road and outside barriers.

Look for a sea of clouds at Liuyun Ridge

A sea of clouds is more likely at Liuyun Ridge (流云岭) on a clear morning after rain, so consider it early in the drive or after the weather clears. Rain and fog can sharply reduce visibility, and cloud views are never guaranteed. Drivers should only stop at safe pull-offs before looking at the scenery.

Windmills beside the birch forest

At Windmills beside the Birch Forest (风车伴桦), white turbines, birch trees and the road come together in one frame, making it a good stop for road photography. The Qiansongba National Forest Park area offers more forest scenery and can be combined with a regional ticket or nearby stops; confirm the day’s entrance and how any combined ticket is sold.

Who will enjoy this route

The route suits visitors comfortable with a continuous drive and getting in and out at several viewpoints, including photography groups and families travelling together. It is not a good fit for anyone planning to walk the full route or rely on a shuttle bus between viewpoints.

Build your day

Quick route: South Entrance to Tiandi T-Stage

Enter at the South Entrance and follow the main road to Tiandi T-Stage. Then follow the signs toward Qiansongba National Forest Park and leave via Exit 1. Allow about 1.5–2 hours, including a stop at the main platform. This route prioritizes the high point rather than every viewpoint.

Full route: follow the viewpoints in order

Enter at the South Entrance and continue through Baihuapo, Tiandi T-Stage and Huanghuading. Spend more time at Liuyun Ridge and Windmills beside the Birch Forest, then leave via Exit 2. Allow about 3–4 hours. Choose among the more than 30 roadside viewpoints according to the weather and safe parking; U-turns are not allowed inside the scenic area.

Driving and parking stops

This is a drive-through route, so pull completely off the road before getting out. The South Gate parking lot is large and has a 24-hour restroom. If you are setting out early to look for a sea of clouds, follow the entrance’s daily operating arrangements; never stop on a bend.

Get there

Navigate to the southern entrance

From Beijing, take the Jingcheng Expressway, then the Jingjia Road and Banhu Line to the South Entrance. Set your navigation destination to “Baili Sky Road South Entrance.” Once in Datan Town, stock up on fuel and food; other Bashang-area attractions shown on the map are not the entrance.

Why driving is the practical option

There is no public transport inside the scenic area, so self-driving is the only recommended way to visit. The road is paved and passenger cars can use it, though an SUV may feel more comfortable on the steeper, winding sections. Slow down if you are not used to mountain roads.

Refuel and restock before entering

There are no gas stations or EV charging points inside the scenic area, and shops and restrooms are sparse along the route. Fill up in Datan Town; electric-vehicle drivers should enter with enough charge and plan where to recharge after leaving. Buy water and snacks in town as well.

Know before you go

One-way traffic and weather

Because the route runs south to north, you cannot simply turn back if you pass a viewpoint. Rain and fog can obscure the views, so check the forecast before setting out. In low visibility, focus on driving safely and do not pull onto the shoulder for a photo.

Steep roads, livestock and altitude

Some sections are steep and winding, and cattle or sheep may cross the road. Slow down and leave a safe following distance. The average elevation is nearly 1,800 m, which may cause mild discomfort for some visitors. Stop and rest if you feel dizzy or short of breath; descend if necessary.

Traffic and nearby stops

On weekends and public holidays, traffic may build up between the expressway exit and the entrance; weekdays are better for driving the full route. Most lodging and restaurants are in Datan Town, where you can try youmian noodles or stewed free-range chicken. Yunzhong Grassland, Yangchang River Wetland and the Qiansongba area can be added on another day or as nearby stops; Baili Sky Road itself covers only the road from its southern entrance to its exit.
