Plan at a glance

Choose an area to visit

Chengde Mountain Resort is at No. 6 Shanzhuang East Road, Shuangqiao District, Chengde, Hebei. Its four areas are the palace area, lake area, plain area and mountain area. There are several entrances: Lizheng Gate is closest to the palaces, Dehui Gate is near the museum and lake, and Wanshuyuan Gate is near the plain and provides access from the north.

Tickets and opening times

Admission is CNY 130 in the peak season, April 1–October 31, and CNY 90 in the off-season, November 1–March 31. Tickets must be booked using a valid ID document. Advance online booking through an official channel or a reputable travel platform is recommended. Overseas visitors should check whether their booking channel accepts passports or other travel documents. From May 1 to October 9, 2026, ticketed visitors may enter through Lizheng, Dehui or Wanshuyuan Gate and leave through Chengguan Gate or Wanshuyuan Gate. Ticket sales at Lizheng and Dehui Gates stop at 17:00, and entry stops at 17:10; entry through Wanshuyuan Gate also stops at 17:10. The resort closes at 18:00. Check the daily notice for the schedules from April 1 to 30 and from October 10 through March 31.

How much time to allow

Allow 2–3 hours for the palace and lake areas. First-time visitors who also want to take the mountain shuttle should plan on 4–6 hours. The mountain shuttle, lake boats and plain-area sightseeing bus are optional; queues and daily operations can change the pace of your visit.

Choose your visit

Imperial history in the palace area

The palace area is a good starting point if you want an introduction to the resort’s history and architecture. Its main highlight is Danbo Jingcheng Hall (澹泊敬诚殿), built with golden-thread nanmu timber and left without painted decoration. Look at the woodwork, proportions and furnishings.

Garden views across the lake

The lake area is known for Yanyu Tower (烟雨楼), Rehe Spring (热河泉), reflections on the water and the layout along the shore. A boat offers another view of the lake, though you may have to queue.

Choosing between the plain and mountain areas

The plain suits families who want open grassland and fewer steps; the sightseeing bus can reduce long walks. The mountain area is for visitors comfortable with an uphill ride who want the view of Putuo Zongcheng Temple from Ermadao (二马道). Ermadao is a viewpoint inside the resort, not an entrance to the temple.

Who will enjoy the resort

History enthusiasts can visit the palace and lake areas in the morning. Photographers may prefer Yanyu Tower and the lake early in the day, then the views from Ermadao in the afternoon. For families, the plain-area bus and lake boat can cut down on walking, but check their prices, queues and daily operations on site.

Build your day

A 2–3-hour visit

Enter through Lizheng Gate, visit the palace area and Danbo Jingcheng Hall, then walk to the lake area for Yanyu Tower. Follow the signs to leave through Chengguan Gate or Wanshuyuan Gate.

A 4–6-hour visit

Start at Lizheng Gate and visit the palace area first. Continue to Yanyu Tower and Rehe Spring in the lake area. If the service is operating, take the mountain shuttle uphill and get off at Ermadao for views of the Outer Eight Temples. Ride back down and leave through Chengguan Gate or Wanshuyuan Gate. Shuttle schedules, queues and mountain closures can affect the timing.

Choosing how to get around

Walk through the palace and lake areas first, then decide whether to pay for the mountain shuttle, a boat or the plain-area sightseeing bus. The mountain road is narrow and winding, so prepare for motion sickness if needed. Boats and sightseeing buses can save walking, but check that they are running and how long the queues are that day.

Get there

From the airport and railway stations

Chengde Puning Airport is about 15 km from the city. Take the airport bus or a taxi into town. Buses and taxis run from Chengde Railway Station and Chengde South Railway Station to the resort. For a first visit, set your navigation destination to the gate you plan to use: Lizheng, Dehui or Wanshuyuan.

Driving and parking

If driving, navigate to “Chengde Mountain Resort Parking Lot.” There are parking areas near the resort, but spaces are limited on public holidays. Lizheng Gate is convenient for the palace area, Dehui Gate for the lake area, and Wanshuyuan Gate for the plain. Ticketed visitors leave through Chengguan or Wanshuyuan Gate; Dehui Gate is an entrance, not an exit.

Getting around after entry

Walking works well between the palace and lake areas. Use the mountain shuttle or sightseeing bus to cover the greater distances to the mountain and plain areas. If travelling with older adults or children, check where tickets are sold, where queues form and which exit you will use before adding the resort’s transport to your route.

Know before you go

Queues and entry times

Try to enter before 09:00; the mountain shuttle and lake boats may have queues later in the day. Weekdays and later afternoon visits are often quieter, but allow enough time before the day’s entry cutoff.

Seasonal and weather closures

Mountain roads may close in winter or during snow and rain, and the shuttle may stop running. Ticket prices, opening hours, boats and sightseeing buses vary by season or weather. Keep the mountain area flexible; if it is closed, stay with the palace and lake areas.

Water, guides and nearby stops

Food and merchandise inside the resort can be expensive, so bring water and a few snacks. Low-priced guide services vary in quality; prepare in advance or choose an official guide. After your visit, you can continue to Putuo Zongcheng Temple or Puning Temple. For breakfast, consider Liuji Lamb Soup (六记羊汤); Qingyuanheng and the Songzhi buns in the Erxianju food area are options across from the resort.
