Plan at a glance

Start with the main temple route

Putuo Zongcheng Temple is in Shizigou Town, Shuangqiao District, Chengde. Use the temple’s own main gate as your entrance. The complex was modelled on the Potala Palace in Lhasa and is often nicknamed the “Little Potala Palace”; use its full name and separate gate when navigating or buying tickets.

Combined ticket and opening times

The ticket is shared with Xumifushou Temple: CNY 80 in the peak season, April 1–October 31, and CNY 60 in the off-season, November 1–March 31. Visitors aged 60 and over enter free with valid proof of age. Children aged 6–18 and full-time students at undergraduate level or below receive half-price tickets with the required documents; children under 6 or under 1.2 m enter free. Tickets must be booked using a valid ID document. Advance online booking through an official channel or a reputable travel platform is recommended. Overseas visitors should check whether their booking channel accepts passports or other travel documents. From May 1 to October 9, 2026, the combined Putuo Zongcheng–Xumifushou scenic area (布达拉·行宫景区) opens at 08:00, stops ticket sales at 17:00, stops entry at 17:10 and closes at 18:00. Check the daily notice for other seasons.

Walking effort and time

There are no transport rides inside the complex. The route climbs in stages and must be completed on foot. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the main buildings or 3–4 hours for a slower climb, the platforms and the prayer-wheel corridor. Wear shoes with good grip; the steps matter more than adding extra photo stops.

Choose your visit

Five Pagoda Gate and the glazed archway

Five Pagoda Gate is in the lower part of the route. Its white platform carries five stupas in red, green, yellow, white and black, marking the approach to the central complex. Farther uphill is a glazed archway inscribed “Pumen Yingxian” (普门应现) on the front and “Lianjie Zhuangyan” (莲界庄严) on the back. Frame a view through the opening and notice the transition from the Han-style entrance to the Tibetan-style complex.

The Great Red Terrace and Hall of Universal Law

The Great Red Terrace, about 43 m high, is the temple’s most prominent structure. The central Hall of Universal Law is roofed with gilded copper tiles. Look at the scale of the terrace, its stairways and the roof details. Photography of Buddha images and murals inside the halls is prohibited; take photos only from permitted outdoor areas.

Views from the upper platform

The top platform of the Great Red Terrace looks over Chengde and the distant mountains. It suits visitors willing to keep climbing. From the foot of the terrace, use a wide-angle lens for an upward view; light is softer after opening in the morning or after 16:00. The Anyuan Temple parking area also offers an exterior view of the full complex, without requiring a ticket for another scenic area.

Who will enjoy this visit

The temple is a good choice for visitors interested in Qing history, Han–Tibetan architecture or Tibetan Buddhist culture, as well as architectural photographers. Older visitors, anyone with knee problems and those who prefer to avoid long stairways can turn back at a suitable point.

Build your day

A 1.5–2-hour short route

Enter through the main gate and climb past the stele pavilion, Five Pagoda Gate and the glazed archway. Continue directly to the Great Red Terrace and Hall of Universal Law, then return the same way or leave through the east gate. If the free shuttle is running, you can take it from the east gate to Xumifushou Temple; decide whether to continue based on the queue and time remaining.

A 3–4-hour full route

Climb the zigzag path at an easy pace, passing the stele pavilion, Five Pagoda Gate and the glazed archway before reaching the group of white platforms and the Great Red Terrace. From the top platform, look over the city and mountains, then descend via the prayer-wheel corridor and leave through the east gate. A free shuttle connects to Xumifushou Temple; the two temples have separate entrances and different highlights.

Photo spots and return

The opening at Five Pagoda Gate works well for a depth-of-field shot, the foot of the Great Red Terrace for an upward view, and the top platform for distant scenery. The Anyuan Temple parking area is an exterior panorama spot. Return to your vehicle by the same route; do not step beyond stairs or barriers to frame the full building.

Get there

Bus and taxi

Take bus 69 or 118 in the city and get off at Putuo Zongcheng Temple stop (普陀宗乘之庙站); the main gate is about a two-minute walk away. A taxi from Chengde South Railway Station takes about 25 minutes, and one from Mountain Resort takes about 10 minutes. Traffic can affect both times.

Driving and parking

Navigate to “Putuo Zongcheng Temple Parking Lot.” Parking is approximately CNY 10 per day, and spaces are generally available. For an exterior panorama only, navigate to “Anyuan Temple Parking Lot”; it is a viewpoint outside this temple, not its entrance, and does not include admission.

Moving around after entry

There is no loop shuttle or electric cart inside. You must walk the full elevation change from the stele pavilion to the Great Red Terrace. Keep water in a small bag and use the open stairways. The free shuttle only connects the two temples; it does not reduce the climb inside either one.

Know before you go

Crowds and tickets

Weekends and public holidays are busier; weekdays or opening time are better for photos and the full route. Tickets must be booked using a valid ID document, and advance online booking is recommended. Overseas visitors should check whether their booking channel accepts passports or other travel documents. Ask the ticket counter whether the combined ticket includes that day’s shuttle. Check the scenic area’s notice for seasonal last-entry times and shuttle service.

Photography and drones

Photography of Buddha images and murals inside the halls is prohibited; take exterior photos only in open areas. Drones are banned throughout the scenic area. At the Anyuan Temple parking area, follow the parking-lot and road rules when taking distant views.

Guides and spending

Be cautious with commercial guide services, especially anyone using religious offerings to pressure visitors into expensive purchases. Ask the price before buying at the many shops. For a meal, return to Qingyuanheng across from Mountain Resort or choose a local restaurant on Erxianju Food Street.
