What to see
Yunzhong Grassland is in Kulongshan Township, Fengning Manchu Autonomous County, Chengde. The main experience combines alpine meadows, wetlands, flower fields, Danxia landforms and Dongshan Summit (东山顶). It has its own main entrance and internal route, making a wetland walk followed by sunset from the summit a complete visit.
Tickets and opening times
The reference ticket price is CNY 80. Tickets are available at the entrance and online; advance reservations are not required. Usual opening hours are 07:30–18:00, subject to the scenic area’s daily notice. If you plan to watch the sunset, check that day’s last-entry time and descent arrangements.
How much time to allow
A 2–3-hour quick route goes straight to Dongshan Summit, with brief stops at the flower fields and wetland viewpoint. Allow 4–5 hours for the full route, including about an hour on the wetland park’s boardwalk, the mountain road, flower fields, Danxia scenery and sunset. The scenic area is large; walking does not replace the driving between stops.

Sunset at Dongshan Summit
Dongshan Summit is the highest point in the scenic area, with open views of the sunset, evening sky and surrounding mountains. Arrive 1–2 hours before sunset to park and find a viewing spot; wind direction can also affect where to stand. The summit is windy, so bring a jacket even in midsummer.
An easy walk on the wetland boardwalk
The wetland park below is linked by an elevated boardwalk with several viewing platforms. The terrain is relatively level, making this a good choice for families and visitors who want to avoid a long climb. In good daylight, the boardwalk and wetland plants make clear photo compositions; allow about an hour on the full route.
Flower fields and Danxia scenery
The grassland and flower fields are usually at their best in July and August. On a clear day, morning is a good time for flower photos. The Danxia viewing area beside the mountain road shows red cliffs against the grassland and can be a stop on the way up or down.
Who will enjoy this visit
This is a good fit for visitors who want to drive to a summit for sunset or stargazing. Families or groups with different fitness levels can walk the wetland boardwalk together, while those who want to continue can drive up to Dongshan Summit. If you are not comfortable with a long mountain drive, limit your stay after dark.

Quick route: 2–3 hours
Enter through the main gate of Yunzhong Grassland Scenic Area or the visitor center, then drive directly to Dongshan Summit. Park as directed and wait for sunset. On the way down, follow the main road and stop once at the flower fields and once at the wetland viewpoint. This route focuses on the summit rather than a full walk on the wetland boardwalk.
Full route: 4–5 hours
From the entrance, drive to the wetland park and walk its boardwalk for about an hour. Return to your vehicle, then follow the mountain road past the flower fields and Danxia viewing area. Finish at Dongshan Summit for sunset and drive down the main road to leave. Crowds increase when the flowers are in bloom, so arrive at the summit well before sunset.
Shuttle buses and parking
Use a private car or the scenic-area shuttle to move between stops; check the day’s boarding points and service on site. Parking is available at the entrance and each viewpoint, and is free. After parking, get out on the side away from traffic; do not stop in the road on mountain sections.

Navigate to the main entrance
If driving, set your destination to “Yunzhong Grassland Scenic Area” or “Yunzhong Grassland Visitor Center,” then follow the main-gate signs when you reach Kulongshan Township. There is no public transport to the scenic area; city buses or a walking connection cannot replace driving or the shuttle.
Getting around inside the scenic area
The wetlands, flower fields, Danxia viewpoints and Dongshan Summit are connected by mountain roads. You will generally need a car or shuttle to move between them. The boardwalk is only for the wetland section; it does not cover the drive from the foot of the mountain to the summit.
Nearby scenery
Yunzhong Grassland and Baili Sky Road are in the same Bashang area and can be visited on the same day: a common plan is to drive another scenic route in the morning and come here for sunset. Check the separate entrances, tickets and opening arrangements for each. Qiansongba National Forest Park is another option for forest scenery.
Know before you go
Season, traffic and sunset
The grassland and flower fields are usually at their best in July and August. Weekends and public holidays can be busy, while weekdays are better for a full visit. Viewpoints fill up around sunset, and parking and finding a place to stand at Dongshan Summit can affect your descent time. Drive more slowly on the mountain road after dark.
Wind, temperature and road conditions
It is windy at the summit and temperatures can drop quickly; carry a jacket and windproof layer. Some mountain roads are in average condition. Drive carefully after rain or when visibility falls, and stay clear of road edges when photographing the Danxia cliffs, flowers or sunset.
Supplies and meals
Services inside the scenic area are limited, so bring water and food before entering. Quality varies at the souvenir stalls by the entrance; check prices before buying. Most dining and accommodation are in Datan Town, where you can try youmian noodles or roast lamb leg. Plan to restock there before the return drive as well.
