Treat it as an open scenic route

Heishui River is more like an open scenic route than a walled scenic area. The main experience is driving along the river, stopping for photos, and taking bamboo rafts or boats through the karst river valley.

Separate the free road from paid boats

The Heishui River area itself is free to access. Boats or bamboo rafts cost separately, commonly around CNY 50-120, depending on the pier, route, and whether you charter a boat.

Use a self-drive route if possible

Self-driving is the best way to experience Heishui River. You can start from Mingshi Rural, follow the river past places such as Shangli Village and Datun Village, then continue toward Shuolong and Detian.

Choose boat operators carefully

If you only want a boat ride, choose a proper pier and ask clearly about the route length, price, shared or private boat arrangement, return point, and whether any explanation is included.

Avoid harsh midday light

Early morning from 08:00-10:00 and late afternoon from 16:00-18:00 are better for photos.
