Plan at a glance

Free entry, reservations and hours

The memorial hall is at No. 7 Shanshang Street (山上街7号), Zhenxing District, Dandong. The grounds include the Memorial Tower, exhibition hall, panoramic painting hall and National Defense Education Park. The exhibits focus on modern history. Make a reservation first, then choose the East or South Gate based on how you will arrive.

Admission is free, but advance reservation is required. Visitors using Chinese identity documents can follow the museum's official WeChat reservation process. The booking and on-site verification procedure for foreign passport holders has not been confirmed; contact the museum before planning your visit. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–16:30, with entry ending at 16:00; it is closed on Mondays. Reservation dates may change, so check the official booking page before setting out.

How much time to allow

Allow about 2–3 hours for a route covering the Memorial Tower, outdoor National Defense Education Park and exhibition hall. A focused visit to the main exhibition areas and panoramic painting hall takes about 1.5 hours. Individual galleries may have different opening schedules; a reservation does not guarantee access to every hall.

Choose your visit

Exhibition hall and historical objects

The exhibition hall presents the Korean War and related history through reconstructed battle scenes, historical photographs, artifacts and letters from fallen soldiers. The exhibits on the Battle of Chosin Reservoir and the Battle of Triangle Hill are useful highlights. Follow the one-way route and read the display labels as you go.

Panoramic painting hall and outdoor equipment

The Panoramic Painting Hall displays the large-scale painting *Encirclement and Annihilation at the Chongchon River*. Ground sculpting and multimedia create a scene of the battle, offering a different experience from display cases and text panels. The National Defense Education Park is outdoors and displays tanks, aircraft and artillery. Check which sections are open that day.

Memorial Tower and choosing an entrance

The Memorial Tower is separate from the indoor exhibition halls. Visitors who want to see the whole complex can visit it before the exhibition hall. The East Gate is more suitable for visitors with limited stamina or those arriving by car. The South Gate has a long flight of steps and requires more effort on foot.

Build your day

Route from the East Gate

Enter through the East Gate and visit the outdoor Memorial Tower and National Defense Education Park first. Then go into the exhibition hall, viewing the second floor before the first floor, and finish at the Panoramic Painting Hall if it is open. Allow about 2–3 hours for the full complex. Entry to the museum ends at 16:00.

A focused 1.5-hour visit

If time is limited, go straight to the exhibition hall for the main galleries, then visit the Panoramic Painting Hall. Allow about 1.5 hours. Check its showtimes and opening areas in the museum; if it is closed, spend the time in the exhibition galleries instead.

The East and South Gates are on different sides of the site, so choose your arrival point before entering. If you use the steps at the South Gate, decide in advance which exit and pickup point you will use after the visit.

Get there

East Gate, South Gate and buses

Set your navigation destination to the East Gate of the Memorial Hall of the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea. The East Gate parking lot is near the top of the hill, with a shorter, gentler walk. Parking can be tight on holidays; consider taking a bus or taxi instead.

Buses including routes 302 and 123 stop at the Korean War Memorial Hall stop (抗美援朝纪念馆站). Taxis are available from central Dandong or Dandong Railway Station. If you plan to use the South Gate steps, confirm where a car can drop you off and where it can pick you up after the visit.

Know before you go

Documents, steps and visiting with children

Reservations use real names and current instructions require entry checks against the reservation document. Ask the museum how foreign passports can be used for reservations and on-site checks. Visitors with foreign passports should confirm the booking and entry process before planning a visit.

The South Gate requires climbing a long flight of steps. Choose the entrance based on your stamina. The museum explains that the 1,014 stone slabs on the entrance steps commemorate the 1,014 days and nights when Chinese People's Volunteers fought in Korea. There are also steps in the grounds, making a stroller inconvenient. War scenes may upset young or sensitive children; parents can review the exhibition themes before bringing them.

Food nearby

Dabao Seafood Noodles and other restaurants are near the memorial hall. Their current locations and opening hours have not been confirmed, so check the listing before going. If you plan to visit the city-center Broken Bridge afterward, allow separate travel time between the two sites.
