How to Visit
1

Enter through the south gate and decide first whether to buy an Old Buildings Area ticket

Go to 32 Keyuan Road, Guancheng. The south gate is better for starting with the historic garden buildings, while the north gate is closer to the exhibition area. The Old Buildings Area costs CNY 8, or CNY 4 for students; the exhibition area is free, and independent visitors can usually enter with ID or buy a ticket on site.

Tip:Keyuan does not use one ticket for every area. Planning it as only a free museum can mean missing the historic garden buildings that are most worth seeing.
2

Follow the order of historic buildings, Keyuan Lake, and the exhibition area

From the south gate, see Cao Cao Cao Tang, Bihong Xiaoxie, Huanbi Corridor, and Invitation Mountain Pavilion, then pause around Keyuan Lake. If time allows, continue to the exhibition area for displays on Lingnan architecture and local culture. Allow 2-3 hours.

Tip:The core garden is compact but full of detail. Following the architectural route first gives a clearer understanding of the layout than repeatedly searching for individual photo spots.
3

Visit Invitation Mountain Pavilion in the middle of the route and wear shoes suited to steps

After Huanbi Corridor and the surrounding courtyards, climb Invitation Mountain Pavilion for an overview of the garden, then continue to Chuyue Pool Hall or the exhibition area. Most of the route is level, but the pavilion and some courtyards have steps.

Tip:The pavilion is the garden's high point, but there is no need to rush there on arrival. Going in the middle of the route gives you context for the view and avoids concentrating all the steps in the hottest part of the day.
4

Avoid the Tuesday closure and leave the old Guancheng walk until after the garden

Keyuan generally opens 09:00-17:30, with last entry at 17:00, and is closed on Tuesdays except public holidays. If time remains, walk from the north gate to Dongguan Memory or the Zhenhua Road area.

Tip:The garden visit and the old-town walk have different rhythms. Finish the garden with its fixed closing time first, so food or street wandering does not cut into the core visit.
Highlights
  • Invitation Mountain Pavilion provides one of the clearest elevated views over the garden after you have understood its layout.
  • Huanbi Corridor links small spaces through covered walkways, decorative windows, and courtyards, making it the best area for a slow walk.
  • Buildings such as Cao Cao Cao Tang and Shuangqing Room show the domestic and study-like scale of a Lingnan private garden.
  • Keyuan Lake, pavilions, and planting provide natural pauses within the historic-building route.
  • The exhibition area adds context on Lingnan architecture and local culture, which is useful for first-time visitors to Dongguan.
Insider Tips

The Old Buildings Area and exhibition area have different ticket arrangements. Decide whether you want the garden, the displays, or both.

Keyuan is generally closed on Tuesdays, so do not put it on the same day as other museums with Tuesday closures.

Weekend afternoons can be busy with photographers; arrive in the morning for a quieter look at the buildings.

Dense planting means summer visitors should bring insect repellent, water, and sun protection.

Selfie sticks are generally unsuitable in the historic-building area. Follow on-site photography rules and do not block narrow corridors.
