How to Visit
1

Plan a full day from Xiahe by self-drive or private car with a driver.

Ganjia Secret Realm combines grassland, Bajiao Ancient City, Baishi Cliff, and monastery stops that are not close together. Allow around 6-7 hours instead of treating it as a quick roadside stop.

Tip:Public transport cannot reliably connect these scattered places. If hiring a driver, confirm that they will wait at each stop rather than only drop you at one entrance.
2

Confirm the day’s access, parking, and internal transport arrangements when you arrive.

At the managed access or parking area, ask which roads are reachable that day, what vehicle rules apply, and whether weather has caused restrictions before choosing a half-day or full-day route.

Tip:Do not rely on unofficial detours or attempts to enter outside normal arrangements. Conditions and access rules can change, leaving you without a workable plan.
3

Start at Bajiao Ancient City and treat it as a separate ruins-and-viewpoint stop.

Park where permitted and walk around the ancient-city site. If the northern viewpoint is safely accessible that day, add it for an elevated view of the ruins; allow around 45-60 minutes.

Tip:Bajiao Ancient City is not next to Baishi Cliff on foot, so allow for another drive afterward. Do not cross fences, pastureland, or site boundaries for drone shots or close-up photos.
4

Drive on to Baishi Cliff and Baishi Cliff Monastery, visiting the cliff before the monastery.

Photograph the cliff from a safe roadside viewpoint, then make a short visit around the monastery. Allow around 1.5-2 hours in total and avoid arriving in a rush near the end of the day.

Tip:The monastery is a separate stop, not simply a photo backdrop beneath the cliff. Keep quiet, dress respectfully, and follow the photography rules on site.
5

Use the grassland or gorge as an optional final stop, then return on the main road.

In stable weather, add a short grassland walk and photo stop. Include remote gorges, caves, or hiking routes only when access is clearly available and a local guide is appropriate.

Tip:Do not add a distant hike on impulse at high altitude. Cloud, rain, and fatigue can make both the walk and the drive back more difficult.
Highlights
  • A one-day highland route linking grassland, ancient ruins, cliff scenery, and a monastery.
  • Bajiao Ancient City is best understood as a separate archaeological stop, from ground level and, where accessible, from above.
  • Baishi Cliff gives the route its strongest landform contrast, with late-day side light often showing more texture.
  • Baishi Cliff Monastery adds a cultural visit to the natural scenery and should be approached as a place of worship, not just a photo stop.
  • Ganjia Grassland is the flexible part of the route; choose the Ganjia Grassland page instead if you only want the grassland drive.
Insider Tips

Schedule Ganjia Secret Realm for a clear day or one with higher cloud cover. Low cloud can hide the mountains and cliffs and reduce the value of long transfers.

Complete Bajiao Ancient City and Baishi Cliff first, then treat gorges, grassland walks, and remote stops as optional extras.

Do not assume Bajiao Ancient City, Baishi Cliff, and the monastery are walkable from one another; each requires time for a road transfer.

Remove hats, keep your voice low, and do not photograph monks, worshippers, or religious activity without permission.

Carry water, sun protection, and a windproof layer. If you develop a headache, unusual fatigue, or worsening weather appears, reduce walking and return directly.
