Plan at a glance

A downtown park and its entrances

Congtai Park is at 159 Zhonghua North Street in Congtai District, Handan. It covers about 360 mu and is a national 4A scenic area. There are south, east, and north entrances; most visitors use the South Gate, about a two-minute walk from the nearby bus stop.

Entry to the park is free, and no reservation is required. Wuling Congtai, Qixian Shrine, and the Stele Forest each charge separately; ask on site for prices. You can walk around the outer grounds and take photos by the lake, but check opening hours if you plan to ascend Wuling Congtai or enter a shrine or exhibition area.

How much time to allow

Allow about one hour to see the exterior of Wuling Congtai, Congtai Lake, and the nearby memorial hall. A 2–3-hour visit can start at Quanxue Pavilion and continue to Congtai, Qixian Shrine, the Stele Forest, the Qin Shi Huang Birthplace Memorial Hall, and around the lake.

The outer park is open for longer hours. Wuling Congtai, Qixian Shrine, the Stele Forest, and other indoor or enclosed attractions have their own schedules; before an evening visit, confirm access to Wuling Congtai and entry to the buildings.

Wuling Congtai and the culture of the Zhao state

Wuling Congtai dates to the reign of King Wuling of Zhao during the Warring States period and is associated with his adoption of Hu-style clothing and mounted archery. From Jusheng Pavilion, you can look out over the old city. The steps at the main entrance also frame the tower’s eaves and outline for an upward-looking photo.

Qixian Shrine is known for its red walls, old cypresses, and memorials to Zhao-state ministers including Lin Xiangru and Lian Po. The Handan Stele Forest displays dozens of steles from the Tang dynasty through the Republican era. The park also has a memorial hall about the Qin First Emperor’s birthplace, covering his life in Handan before age eight.

Lake views and a place to unwind

Congtai Lake surrounds the old tower. You can take a boat or walk along the lakeside boardwalk; Wangzhu Pavilion in the middle of the lake is a good spot for reflections and garden views. The lakeside path suits visitors with limited time or those looking for an easy downtown stroll.

The park combines historic buildings with a place where local residents spend time, and suits history enthusiasts, visitors interested in traditional-style photography, and anyone curious about everyday life in Handan. Handan Dao and Xuebu Bridge are nearby for a continuation of the walk, but both are outside the park.

Build your day

An approximately one-hour short route from the South Gate

Enter at the South Gate and first see the exterior of Wuling Congtai. Continue to Congtai Lake for a reflection photo, then visit the Qin Shi Huang Birthplace Memorial Hall. Finish with photos by the red walls of Qixian Shrine and exit at the South Gate. Allow about one hour; this route views Congtai from outside and does not depend on access to Wuling Congtai.

If the memorial hall is closed, walk farther along the lake before leaving through the South Gate. This route does not include Handan Museum, Handan Dao, or Xuebu Bridge.

A 2–3-hour deeper visit to the park

Enter at the South Gate and start at Quanxue Pavilion to see the statue of Xunzi. Continue to Wuling Congtai, Qixian Shrine, the Handan Stele Forest, and the Qin Shi Huang Birthplace Memorial Hall at the southwest corner; then walk along the boardwalk around Congtai Lake. Allow about 2–3 hours. Exit at the North Gate or return to the South Gate.

After exiting at the North or West Gate, you can continue to Handan Dao; Xuebu Bridge is near the district. If you add Handan Museum to the same day, make a separate reservation and avoid Monday, when it is closed.

Get there

Bus, driving, and parking

Take bus 3, 17, 20, 21, or 604 to “Congtai Park” stop, then walk about two minutes to the South Gate. Parking nearby is in high demand on holidays, so the bus or a shared bicycle may be more convenient.

If driving, navigate to “Congtai Park South Gate Parking Lot,” or use the nearby New Century Plaza parking lot. Check the posted fee at the entrance. The South Gate lot is the main navigation point, though you can also enter from the east or north gates.

From the park to Handan Dao

Exit through the West or North Gate to reach Handan Dao Historic and Cultural District. Xuebu Bridge is near the district, not inside the park. Congtai Park and Handan Museum are separate attractions; plan them around each venue’s opening schedule.

Know before you go

Indoor opening hours and photography

For an evening visit, check the on-site notice first to see whether Wuling Congtai, Qixian Shrine, or the Stele Forest can be visited that night. Congtai is lit from about 19:30 to 21:00, which can be a reference for night photography.

For daytime photos, try 08:30–11:00. The lakeshore north of Congtai captures the tower’s reflection, and the red wall at Qixian Shrine works well for portraits. Arrive before 09:00 on holidays such as May Day and Qingming. Much of the park has stone paving, so wear comfortable shoes with good grip.

Food and photo experiences nearby

The park’s large-bowl tea costs about CNY 3, with refills available. Nearby options include Cizhou braised noodles, donkey-meat flatbread at Maliansheng on Handan Dao, and Guo Ba flatbread. Lühua Road and Ziqiang Market have snacks such as cold skin noodles, pan-fried pig’s blood, and fried stuffed pouches.

Period-style Warring States costume rental and makeup nearby start at about CNY 80. Ask what the package includes and how long it lasts before deciding.
