The Warring States bronze horse and a Han-dynasty wine vessel
The “Gandan Splendor” exhibition on the third floor includes a Warring States bronze horse and a gold- and silver-decorated imperial wine vessel. The horse is one of the earliest realistic bronze horses found in China, dating to about 400 years before the “Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow.” The Han-dynasty vessel was used by the imperial household and retains gold- and silver-gilt decoration.
The same floor also displays a three-dragon ornament inlaid with jade and decorated with gilding, combining gold, jade, and agate work. Visitors interested in Handan’s history and ancient objects can make the third floor a priority.
The “Handan Smile,” stone carving, and Cizhou ware
The “Handan Smile” on the fourth floor is a Northern Qi arhat head carved from red sandstone. Looking straight at it from the front brings out its expression. The fourth floor also has stone art and Cizhou ware; the second floor is mainly used for temporary exhibitions.
The first-floor lobby’s hammered-copper mural and group of Warring States bronze horses are good photo stops after you enter. The bronze horse is in the museum; Congtai Park is a separate place.
Build your day
An approximately one-hour highlights route
Take the elevator from the lobby to the third floor. Start with the Warring States bronze horse and gold- and silver-decorated imperial wine vessel in “Gandan Splendor,” then go up to the fourth floor to see the “Handan Smile” carving. Work your way down from the fourth floor, return to the first-floor lobby for the mural, and finish your visit there.
A 2–3-hour floor-by-floor visit
Start on the fourth floor with stone art and Cizhou ware, then work down floor by floor through the historical displays and key objects on the third floor. Finish with the temporary exhibitions on the second floor and return to the lobby. This route goes downward from the upper floors, so you do not need to go back upstairs at the end.
Free tours start in the lobby at 09:30 and 14:30 each day. If you want to join one, arrange your floor order around the tour time. Temporary exhibitions depend on the day’s gallery schedule.
