Plan at a glance
The South Gate visitor center and mountain area
East Taihang is in Huoshui Township, Wu'an. The main entrance is the South Gate visitor center, where tickets and in-area transfers are arranged. The North Gate is closer to North Peak, but independent visitors generally take a shuttle there from the South Gate; plan your visit around the South Gate and its transfers.
The main route connects the southern entrance, the cliffside walkway, Taihang Pillar, Sky Ridge Great Wall, and North Peak. The cableway, cliff elevator, mountain slide, and shuttle serve different sections. Allow about 2–3 hours for the shorter route, 4–6 hours for the highlights route, or 6–8 hours for a full hike.
Ticket prices and seasonal hours
In peak season (April–October), the scenic area is open 07:00–18:00. In the off-season (November–March), it is open 08:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:00. The CNY 210 pass includes admission, round-trip cableway, glass walkway, cliff elevator, mountain slide, and shuttle bus. A CNY 180 discounted pass is also available; check which ID documents qualify when buying.
Separate prices are CNY 130 for admission, CNY 75 for a one-way cableway ride, CNY 60 for a one-way shuttle, and CNY 20 per cliff-elevator ride. Advance purchase is available through the official mini program or online travel platforms. Published real-name instructions specify the mainland Chinese Resident Identity Card for online registration and entry, but do not explain passport-based booking or entry. Visitors using a foreign passport should contact the scenic area before buying (ticketing: +86 310 596 3333). Check which facilities are operating and what the pass covers that day.

Danxia ridges and viewpoints
North Peak is 1,428 m above sea level and overlooks the surrounding mountains. The Sky Ridge Great Wall follows the ridgeline, and Taihang Pillar is a distinctive rock formation along the route. The cliffside walkway runs close to the rock face, bringing the Danxia formations and their textures into view.
The area is known for Danxia landforms and rock layers patterned like streaky pork. Visit the North Peak viewpoint for a wide mountain panorama; a telephoto lens can bring out the rock textures. Whether you see a sea of clouds depends on the weather that day.
Glass walkway and mountain transport
The glass walkway, mountain slide, cableway, and cliff elevator sit at different points on the route. They reduce some of the walking or provide a way down. The glass walkway adds a detour, so skip it if time is tight or you want to limit walking.
The scenic area suits visitors who want to see Danxia mountains and photograph the ridges and walkways, while using rides to reduce some of the climbing. Families can use the cableway, elevator, and slide to avoid some uphill sections, though the walkway still involves walking. The full hiking route takes 6–8 hours and requires greater stamina.
The airship and “cradle” attractions can have long queues and add little to the main route, so skip them if time is limited.
Build your day
A 2–3-hour easier route from north to south
Take the shuttle from the South Gate visitor center to the North Gate, then climb North Peak. Follow the Sky Ridge Great Wall south, take the cliff elevator down, pass Taihang Pillar, and descend by cableway. The route takes about 2–3 hours and returns you to the South Gate area.
Starting near North Peak avoids the long climb from the southern side. Independent visitors should buy tickets and board the shuttle at the South Gate rather than driving to the North Gate as if it were a regular entrance.
A 4–6-hour highlights route from south to north
From the South Gate, take the cableway uphill. Pass South Heaven Gate and follow the cliffside walkway north; the glass walkway is optional. Continue by cliff elevator to Middle Heaven Gate, pass Taihang Pillar, and follow the Sky Ridge Great Wall to North Peak. Take the mountain slide down, then the shuttle back to the South Gate. Allow about 4–6 hours; the glass-walkway detour adds time.
Hikers can walk uphill from the South Gate and complete the walkway and main sights in about 6–8 hours. Confirm in advance whether independent visitors can enter at the North Gate. Buying a one-way cableway ticket and then hiking the full route takes substantially more effort; choose the pass or check each transport fare against your route.
Get there
From Handan or Wu'an
If driving, navigate to “East Taihang Visitor Center.” Parking at the South Gate costs CNY 10 per day. A tourist shuttle runs from Handan East Railway Station; alternatively, take bus 808 from Handan West Bus Station to Wu'an, then transfer to local transport or a taxi. The taxi fare is about CNY 40.
Driving from Beijing takes about 5–6 hours. If combining East Taihang with nearby scenic areas, plan for two days. The South Gate is the usual arrival point and the place to board the shuttle to the North Gate.
North Gate access and return to the South Gate
The North Gate is close to North Peak, but independent visitors may not be able to enter directly there. For a north-to-south route, first take the shuttle from the South Gate. For the south-to-north route, descend by mountain slide after North Peak and take the shuttle back to the South Gate.
Know before you go
Passes, queues, and ride availability
On holidays, cableway queues may reach about 40 minutes; aim to arrive at the South Gate before 07:30. The pass lists the cableway, glass walkway, elevator, slide, and shuttle, but actual operation and inclusions depend on that day’s ticketing and facility status.
Buying multiple cliff-elevator rides separately adds about CNY 20 per ride. The airship and “cradle” attractions may have long queues. The glass walkway adds a detour and can be skipped if time is short or you want to limit walking.
Weather, photography, and food nearby
You are more likely to see a sea of clouds from 07:00–09:00 or after rain clears. Stay on open paths when taking photos along the ridges and glass walkway. Low clouds can block distant views, and weather may pause the cableway or slide; check operating conditions before setting out.
Near the entrance, you can find hand-pulled noodles for about CNY 12 and a large-pot stew for about CNY 15. Jingniang Lake and Qibugou are two other independent scenic areas in Wu'an, each with its own entrance and itinerary. If visiting more than one, account separately for mountain-road travel and time at each site.
