Plan at a glance
The old city and its main entrance
Guangfu Ancient City lies in southeastern Yongnian District, Handan, in the middle of Yongnian Wetland. The city has south, north, east, and west gates, each with a parking lot nearby; most visitors enter through the South Gate.
The lanes and moat-side paths are free to explore. Guangping Prefectural Office, the city wall, and the former residences have separate admission; choose the paid courtyards that fit your plans. At night, limit your visit to the lanes and moat area.
Tickets and timing
A five-attraction pass costs about CNY 49–66 and covers Guangping Prefectural Office, the ancient city wall, the former residences of Yang Luchan and Wu Yuxiang, and Hongji Bridge. A six-attraction pass costs about CNY 80–88 and adds the Wu Family Compound. A separate ticket for the Wu Family Compound costs about CNY 30–35. No reservation is required; tickets are available on site and through online platforms. Check the day’s prices and pass inclusions before buying.
Allow about 2–2.5 hours for the South Gate, South Main Street, and moat area; set aside 4–5 hours to include the office, former residences, and city wall. A night visit takes about 2–2.5 hours, when the ticketed attractions are already closed.

Taijiquan heritage and the former prefectural city
Guangfu was founded during the Sui and Tang dynasties and served as the seat of Guangping Prefecture during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is also the birthplace of Yang-style and Wu-style Taijiquan. Guangping Prefectural Office and the former residences of Yang Luchan and Wu Yuxiang suit visitors interested in local history and Taijiquan; the Wu Family Compound is another ticketed courtyard that you can add if it interests you.
The city wall and barbican reveal the old city’s defensive layout. From the wall, you can look down over the lanes and moat. If time is short, the barbican near the South Gate, South Main Street, and the waterside give you a sense of the city’s character.
Waterside scenery and photo spots
The moat encircles the old city, with stone-bridge reflections, the South Gate barbican, and small lanes among the photo spots. Beyond the main street, residents still live and work in the old city, making its lanes good for an unhurried walk; boat service on the moat depends on the weather.
Guangfu suits visitors interested in historic architecture, Taijiquan, walking, and drives around the area. It may not meet expectations if you are looking for a dense snack street or highly commercial entertainment.
Build your day
A two-hour walk through the old city
Enter through the South Gate, walk along South Main Street and through the barbican, then follow the moat-side path before returning to the South Gate. Allow about 2–2.5 hours. This route focuses on free lanes and waterside scenery; it does not include Hongji Bridge or the ticketed courtyards.
If you arrive around dusk, start the same-area night walk from the South Gate at about 18:00. See the barbican and stone bridges by the moat first, then explore South Main Street; consider a boat ride only if the weather and service allow. Ticketed attractions are closed at night.
A 4–5-hour highlights route and a farther stop
Enter through the South Gate and visit the former residence of Wu Yuxiang first, then continue to Guangping Prefectural Office. Walk to the East Gate, climb onto the city wall, and follow it back to the South Gate to exit. The route takes about 4–5 hours and includes the former residence, the office, and the wall; add time and buy a separate ticket if you want to visit the Wu Family Compound.
Hongji Bridge is about a 40–50-minute walk one way from the old city center, so arrange separate transport to reach it. A shuttle costing about CNY 20 per person can provide a connection. The bridge is outside the two-hour walking route. If you plan to enter the Wu Family Compound, check that day’s ticket options and opening hours.
Get there
Bus, driving, and parking
Take bus 605 to the South Gate; there is no subway nearby. If driving or taking a taxi, navigate to “Guangfu Ancient City South Gate Parking Lot.” Parking costs about CNY 10 per 24 hours.
There are parking lots by all four city gates, and the South Gate is the most commonly used. Its lot may fill quickly on holidays; follow local directions to the Hantun parking lot and take the free shuttle from there. Outside vehicles are not allowed to enter the old city.
Getting around inside the city
There are no shared bicycles or electric scooters in the old city, but private electric carts and tricycles are available to rent. You can walk along the city wall or rent a bicycle to ride around it.
Know before you go
Ticketed attractions and opening hours
The city wall is open from 09:00 to 18:00. Other ticketed attractions generally open from about 08:00 to 18:00, with ticket checks ending around 17:30–18:00. The free lanes and moat-side paths are accessible throughout the day; city lighting is usually on from about 18:20 to 22:00.
Holiday crowds can be heavy, and parking by the South Gate may fill up. Light shows may be held on holidays only; check on-site information for pass inclusions, last admission, and event schedules.
Weather, photos, and local snacks
Boat service on the moat may stop because of the weather, so decide whether to ride after you arrive. The South Gate barbican works for daytime or night photography; the stone bridges by the moat capture reflections of the wall, while the small lanes show everyday life in the city.
Try Yongnian smoked fish, zeng zhou (缯肘), a local pork-hock dish, donkey-meat sausage, and sesame flatbread cooked with donkey fat. Restaurants such as Maliansheng in the old city serve donkey-meat dishes. Local snack preferences vary; if you are trying them for the first time, order a small portion.
