An open urban riverfront, not an enclosed attraction
The Harbin section of the Songhua River has several riverfront entry points, including the Flood Control Monument plaza, Jiuzhan Park and Stalin Park. The parks and paths on both banks are free and do not require reservations, but ferries, sightseeing boats, winter ice activities and river crossings each have their own operation. There is no single opening time for the whole riverfront.
Choose between summer-and-autumn waterside routes and winter ice activities. A summer-and-autumn highlights route takes about 2–4 hours and a winter short route about 1–2 hours. Water level, weather, ice, and construction can change what is possible that day, so use only the areas that are open.
Identify the bank entrance and crossing first
The Flood Control Monument is a common starting point on the south bank; Jiuzhan Park and Stalin Park also lead to the riverside path. Central Street Station on Metro Line 2 is near the monument, while Youyi Palace Station on Line 3 is closer to the cableway direction. The ferry, railway bridge and cableway do not share an entrance.
The railway bridge can be walked all day in summer. Ferry service is currently listed as 08:30–17:30 but depends on weather and water level. Winter river activities usually appear from December through February; opening dates and ice thickness follow seasonal management. Visitors must not decide for themselves whether the ice is safe.

Summer and autumn: riverbank, railway bridge and ferry
In clear weather, the Flood Control Monument, Stalin Park and the railway bridge offer different river views. The railway bridge's glass walkway reveals the industrial structure and river below; the monument riverfront works for sunset; the ferry gives a water-level view towards Sun Island.
Winter: ice activities follow seasonal opening
The winter ice-and-snow carnival entrance is often under the stairs beside the Flood Control Monument and usually operates from December through February. Snow-tube drifting and ice airboats may charge separately; prices, open ice areas and equipment follow the seasonal on-site arrangement.
The ice is a managed seasonal space. Enter only areas clearly marked open and supervised. Do not walk onto unopened ice, ice-cutting work areas or dangerous water, and do not approach the ice edge, vehicles or workers for photographs.
Build your day
2–4-hour summer-and-autumn walk and crossing
Start at the Flood Control Monument, follow Stalin Park east along the river, reach Songhua River Railway Bridge and walk across towards Sun Island. The bridge centre is enough for a view and photographs; walking the entire bridge is optional, and you should decide in advance how to leave from the Sun Island side.
When the ferry is operating, you can also board near the monument for Sun Island. The public ferry costs around CNY 2 and the sightseeing ferry costs separately. Services depend on weather and water level, so confirm the direction before boarding; if necessary, return to the south bank and change to the metro or a taxi.
1–2-hour winter short route
Enter the clearly open ice-and-snow activity area via the stairs beside the Flood Control Monument. First observe the managed boundary and safety routes, then choose one or two activities. Individual activities usually cost extra; the ticket office sets the same-day package and queue rules.
Wind is strong on the ice and the perceived temperature is low. Finish the short route by following the open path back to a warm place on shore. If the ice, entrance or activity status changes and the managed area closes, stay on the riverbank path and park viewpoints.
The CNY 2 public-ferry route
Public ferries and sightseeing boats do not use the same pier. If you want the low-cost public ferry, confirm the operating pier, price and Sun Island direction on the day of departure.
If you see only sightseeing boats or a suspended ferry, ask about the price and destination before boarding. Visitors heading to Sun Island must also plan the walk, sightseeing bus or metro connection after arrival; the boat ticket does not cover other paid attractions on the island.
Get there
Flood Control Monument and Stalin Park entrances
Take Metro Line 2 to Central Street Station and walk to the Flood Control Monument plaza. Stalin Park extends east along the river from the monument and can be entered directly from the north end of Central Street. Jiuzhan Park is another riverfront access point, useful for the ferry or cableway direction.
Railway bridge and cableway direction
Youyi Palace Station on Metro Line 3 is near the south-bank station of the Songhua River Cableway, which is a separate paid crossing. The railway bridge is an open pedestrian bridge; the bridge, cableway and ferry have separate entrances, queues and return arrangements.
Walking, ferries and the return
In summer and autumn, the Flood Control Monument → Stalin Park → railway bridge → Sun Island can form a one-way route. In winter, keep the ice-area visit short and stay within the open zone. The return options from the far side of the bridge and from Sun Island differ, so confirm the direction for the metro, ferry, cableway or taxi before leaving.

Water level, weather and ferries
Ferry hours are currently listed as 08:30–17:30 but may change or stop because of weather, water level or route adjustments. Keep away from the water when the embankment is slippery. Before boarding, ask about the price, route and whether you must return the same way; do not accept a paid boat arrangement when the details are unclear.
The river feels windier and colder than the city streets in summer and autumn, especially on the railway bridge and open banks. Winter is colder still; a windproof face covering, hat, gloves and shoes with good grip are more useful than clothing chosen only for quick photos, and electronics should be kept close to the body.
Ice and winter activities
Winter river activities usually run from December through February, with dates, ice, entrances and paid activities changing by season. Enter only areas with a clear opening notice and staff supervision. Stay away from ice cutting, transport, construction and dangerous water, and never step onto the ice independently from the bank.
Ice activities cost extra and may have queues, so identify the must-do activity before buying. Ice airboats, snow tubes and other activities have different safety requirements. Children should stay with an adult; leave the ice immediately if you feel cold, dizzy or unsteady.
