Plan at a glance
A separate heritage site with its own entrance
The ruins are northwest of Beiguan Village in Jizhou District, Hengshui. Navigate to “Hengshui Lake · Jizhou Ancient City Ruins” (衡水湖·冀州古城遗址) for the main entrance and parking area. Although the site is in the Hengshui Lake area, it has a separate entrance and admission ticket. A Hengshui Lake cruise ticket does not include a visit to the ruins.
How long to spend
Allow about 1–1.5 hours to follow the main path past the surviving wall sections, moat exhibit area, site marker and watchtower. If the pigeon area, archaeology experience area and lakeside path are open, the visit can extend to 2–3 hours. The reference opening hours are 08:30–18:30; confirm the last ticket-sales time at the entrance.

City-wall remains and moat wetlands
Jizhou Ancient City dates to 201 BCE, the sixth year of Emperor Gaozu of Han. Sections of the western and northern walls survive today, alongside a wetland area around the moat. The site focuses on ruins and interpretation, and suits visitors interested in local history, ancient city sites and wetlands.
The watchtower, site marker and experience areas
The stone marker for “Jizhou Ancient City Ruins” and the old watchtower are the main landmarks. Open areas offer places to look around and take photos. Pigeon-dance performances, archaeology activities, Han-style costume parades and cormorant fishing are not regular offerings; check the site's notices to see what is available.
Build your day
Short route: follow the main path and return
Enter through the main entrance and follow the open path past the wall remains, moat exhibit area, site marker and watchtower. Return to the entrance along the same route; allow about 1–1.5 hours. Do not touch the rammed-earth walls, climb closed watchtowers or cross barriers.
Longer route: add experience areas only when open
Allow 2–3 hours. First complete the main route by the walls and moat, then visit the Xindu pigeon-dance area and archaeology experience area if they are open that day. Finish by returning to the entrance along the open lakeside path. If these areas are closed, follow the short route instead. Check on-site notices for pigeon feed, experience tickets and the path's exit arrangements.
Get there
Drive or take a taxi from Hengshui North
By car, take the “Hengshui South” (衡水南) exit from the Daguang Expressway and continue to the site. Parking is at the main entrance; the reference fee is about CNY 10 per day. From Hengshui North Railway Station (衡水北站), a taxi to Jizhou District takes about 30–40 minutes. Current information is not sufficient to give a reliable bus route, so a taxi is the more direct option from the station.
Prepare for a self-guided visit
If you are interested in the site's history, prepare a guide or other visitor information in advance. Stay on open routes when viewing or taking photos. Climb the watchtower only if it is open that day, and do not enter closed parts of the ruins.
Know before you go
Tickets and opening hours
The ruins have separate admission and are not covered by a Hengshui Lake boat ticket. Check the attraction's official booking information or the entrance notice for the ticket price, reservation requirements and ticket-sales cutoff.
Reference opening hours are 08:30–18:30, but the ticket-sales cutoff is not specified. Check the entrance notice before setting your arrival time.
Jizhou Old Street is a separate stop
Jizhou Old Street is a separate, free stop and takes about 1–2 hours. Recreated scenes include an old-style cinema and a traditional Chinese supply-and-marketing cooperative shop. You will need to drive or arrange other transport; it is not part of the ruins route.
In Jizhou District, try Jizhou menbing (冀州焖饼) or xiedi shaobing with smoked meat (鞋底烧饼夹熏肉).
