Start at Henghu Bay Pier
Hengshui Lake's scenic area spans open water, wetlands, islands and shore-side areas. This guide covers the lake cruises and the main island routes. The main island stops are on the west side of the lake, while the cruise pier is on the east bank. For a first boat trip, navigate to Henghu Bay Pier (衡湖湾码头) or Hengshui Lake National Wetland Park (衡水湖国家湿地公园). Hengshui Lake Visitor Center (衡水湖游客中心) and Hengshui Garden Expo Park (河北省园林博览园；常用名“衡水园博园”) are farther from the main pier; use the Henghu Bay Pier entrance to board.
Access to the lakeside areas is free, while cruises and island visits require a separate ticket. The reference fare for the basic cruise is CNY 60 per person and includes Sansheng Island (三生岛) and Meihua Island (梅花岛). Free entry reservations can be made through the “衡水湖旅游景区” WeChat mini program.
How much time to allow
A cruise with island and wetland stops takes about 2–3 hours. Allow 4–6 hours if you also want to visit the east bank for sunset and a meal after leaving the boat. The cruise and lakeside walk are separate activities, so arrange a vehicle or local transport for the transfer.

Islands, reed beds and waterbirds
Sansheng Island (三生岛) and Meihua Island (梅花岛) are the main stops on the basic cruise route. Their wooden boardwalks bring you close to the lake and wetlands. Look for reed beds, lotus wetlands and birds such as egrets and grey herons from the boat. Lotus blooms are most abundant in summer, and the scenery changes with the season.
Make the lakeside sunset a separate stop
Lotus Garden (荷花园) and Marathon Square (马拉松广场) on the east bank are good places to watch the sun set over the lake. This is a different experience from the daytime cruise. The area suits visitors who want to take their time in the wetlands, photograph the lake or watch birds. If you are only taking the cruise, return to Henghu Bay Pier. Lotus Garden and Marathon Square are not part of the cruise route.

Short route: cruise out and back from the pier
Buy your ticket at Henghu Bay Pier and board the boat. Follow the day's scheduled stops to visit Sansheng Island, Meihua Island and the wetlands along the route, then return to the same pier. Allow about 2–3 hours. There are few dining options on the islands, so return to the pier according to the boat schedule after walking the boardwalks.
Longer route: continue to the east bank after the cruise
Allow 4–6 hours. In the afternoon, take a cruise from Henghu Bay Pier, visit the islands, and return to the pier. Then travel by road along the east bank to Lotus Garden or Marathon Square for sunset. You can have dinner at a lakeside farmhouse restaurant afterward. The sunset viewpoint is reached by road after you return to the pier.

Travel from Hengshui North Station to the pier
Hengshui North Railway Station (衡水北站) is served by high-speed rail. A taxi from the station to Henghu Bay Pier takes about 20 minutes. If driving, navigate to “衡湖湾码头” or “衡水湖国家湿地公园” and use the designated parking area. The parking lot at Hengshui Lake Visitor Center / the Garden Expo Park is not the parking lot for Henghu Bay Pier.

You need to take a boat to reach Sansheng Island and Meihua Island.

Boat times and separate tickets
Cruises usually run from 08:30 to 17:30, with last entry at 17:00. Check the pier's notice on the day for actual departures, fares and island stops. The boat ticket covers the lake cruise and island visits only. The Garden Expo Park, Jizhou Ancient City Ruins and Lvli Ancient Town each have their own ticketing and entrance arrangements.
Supplies and photography on the islands
Dining options on the islands are limited, so bring drinking water and a small amount of food before boarding. The boardwalk on Meihua Island is a good place to photograph the lake and birds. Sunset at Lotus Garden is an east-bank stop after the cruise; take photos only in public areas that are open to visitors.
Nearby dining and independent attractions
Consider a fish meal or farmhouse cooking by the lake. Jizhou menbing (冀州焖饼) is another local option during a visit to Hengshui. Jizhou Ancient City Ruins and the Garden Expo Park require separate trips. If you plan to visit one on the same day, check its entrance and opening hours and arrange the road transfer separately.
