How to Visit
1

Choose the West Peak cableway from the visitor center

The West Peak cableway is a good option if you want to save energy and enter the main peak area directly. You usually check in at the visitor center, take the scenic shuttle to the lower cableway station, then ride the cableway up.

Tip:Pay attention to your reserved entry time. The hiking entrance and cableway entrance are different, so make sure you buy the right ticket type.
2

Visit the core West Peak area first

Start with Lotus Peak, Cuiyun Palace, and Axe-Split Rock. These sights are close together and are easier to cover while your energy is still steady.

Tip:West Peak has many steps and cliffside paths, so avoid taking photos while walking.
3

Decide whether to continue to South Peak

Continuing from West Peak to South Peak is a common route. If you want to complete the main peak circuit, continue toward South Peak, East Peak, and Central Peak.

Tip:If your group has limited stamina, it is more practical to return to the West Peak cableway after visiting West Peak.
4

Leave enough time to return to the cableway

Going up and down by West Peak is easier than the full circuit, but it still involves constant stone steps.

Tip:Descending crowds can build up in the afternoon, so do not cut your return close to the last cableway.
Highlights
  • Lotus Peak is the main summit of West Peak, with clear rock formations and a good short stop for reading the shape of the main peak area.
  • Cuiyun Palace has a recognizable mix of red walls, rock, and pine trees, with softer light in the afternoon.
  • Axe-Split Rock is tied to the Chenxiang legend and is one of the easiest cultural sights to understand on West Peak.
  • The West Peak cableway itself is part of the experience, showing Huashan's height and cliff terrain.
  • In clear weather, the ridge between West Peak and South Peak has wide views, but the path requires full attention.
Insider Tips

Gloves are more useful than trekking poles because many sections require holding chains.

It can be windy on the mountain, so bring a light windproof layer even in summer.

Bring a small amount of food and water, but avoid carrying too much weight up the steps.

Fog or rain will reduce the view and make cliffside sections more slippery.

If you only want an easier taste of the main peak area, going up and down by West Peak is more suitable than a full crossing.
