How to Visit
1

Use it as the easier gateway to the main peaks

The West Peak Cableway is best for first-time visitors who want the core Huashan scenery without a long uphill approach. Its upper station is close to West Peak and South Peak.

Tip:This route saves your energy for walking between the summit areas instead of spending it all on the climb from the base.
2

Take the scenic shuttle from the visitor center

The cableway does not start directly at the visitor center. You first take a scenic-area shuttle bus to the lower cableway station, then ride the cableway up.

Tip:Security checks, shuttle transfers, queues, and the cableway ride all take time, so do not plan the approach as only a 20-minute cable car ride.
3

Visit West Peak and South Peak first

After arriving near West Peak, visit West Peak first, then continue to South Peak if your energy allows. If you plan to keep walking toward East Peak, Central Peak, and North Peak, control your photo stops and rest time from the beginning.

Tip:The second half of a west-up north-down route can become rushed if you spend too long near the upper cableway station.
4

Choose west-down or north-down based on stamina

For an easier visit, especially with older travelers or children, go up and down by the West Peak Cableway. The route is shorter and easier to manage.

Tip:If you want to see more of the main peaks and avoid too much backtracking, go up by West Peak and down by North Peak, but remember that this still involves a long mountain walk.
5

Leave time for the downbound queue

The West Peak Cableway has dramatic views, but queues can also be long in peak season. Do not stay on the summit until close to the final operating time.

Tip:If you need to catch a train or return to Xi'an the same day, decide in the afternoon whether to continue deeper into the route or turn back.
Highlights
  • The cableway travels close to steep granite cliffs, making the ride more dramatic than a typical mountain cable car.
  • The upper station puts you near West Peak and South Peak, two of Huashan's most important summit areas.
  • It works well for first-time one-day visitors because it saves energy for the ridge walk.
  • The west-up north-down route covers more peak scenery without returning to the same cableway.
  • The west-up west-down route is better for a lighter visit or slower-moving groups.
Insider Tips

The West Peak Cableway usually costs more than the North Peak Cableway, and the shuttle bus is charged separately.

Visitors with a strong fear of heights should choose carefully; the height and cliffside views feel intense.

On holidays, arrive at the visitor center early because both the shuttle bus and cableway can have queues.

When planning your descent, include the walk from the summit area back to the cableway station.

Bad weather can affect both the view and cableway operation, especially during strong wind or thunderstorms.
