Plan at a glance
Location and entrance
Jiumenkou Water Great Wall (九门口水上长城) is in Lijiabao Township, Suizhong County, Huludao, near the Liaoning–Hebei border. Set your navigation to “九门口水上长城游客中心” (Jiumenkou Water Great Wall Visitor Center). Searching for “Shanhaiguan” or “Old Dragon's Head” will take you to other attractions in Qinhuangdao.
Allow about 2 hours for the water bridge and open wall sections. If both the museum and tunnel are open, plan for half a day. Work backward from that day's opening hours when deciding when to enter.

Choose your visit
The bridge over the river and nine water gates
The Jiujiang River passes beneath the bridge section of the wall, where the spaces between the piers form nine water gates. This is the site's most recognizable view. Start from an open viewing area to see the bridge, water gates and valley, then follow on-site directions onto wall sections visitors may enter. River levels, rain and temporary controls can change the water views.
Ridge wall and pass ruins
Open wall sections offer views of the ridges, wall and watchtower ruins. Follow barriers and staff directions to see which sections are accessible; do not cross a closure line onto unopened wild sections of the Great Wall.
Jiumenkou Great Wall Museum
The Liaoning Department of Culture and Tourism describes galleries on Great Wall history and construction, as well as an immersive experience about the Battle of Yipianshi. Before entering, check the day's opening hours, whether there is a separate admission charge and whether museum entry is included with your scenic-area ticket. Do not assume the tickets are interchangeable just because the museum is nearby.
Great Wall tunnel
The Great Wall Tunnel (长城隧道) is a separate experience. Its opening status, entrances and exits, direction of travel and shuttle arrangements depend on that day's scenic-area plan. Before entering, ask about safety conditions, the exit, whether you can return the way you came and the last shuttle. If any of these details are unclear, do not enter.
For a separate coastal stay with its own access points and transfers, see Dongdaihe Coastal Resort Area.
Build your day
About 2 hours, out and back
At the visitor center, first check the open-area map, last shuttle and transfer arrangements. Follow the day's transport plan to the scenic entrance, see the bridge over the river and nine water gates, then walk an explicitly open section of wall or viewpoint area. Return along the same route to the designated entrance. Confirm at the visitor center whether the shuttle runs both ways, where the walk starts and how far it is; stay on mapped open routes.
Half-day visit with the museum and tunnel
If the museum is open, visit after the wall. Add the tunnel only after the scenic-area staff explain its opening status, exit, return route and shuttle. Otherwise, skip it; do not cross a closed section or leave through Hebei on your own.
Leave time for the return trip
Before leaving the wall, confirm the last bus, transfer to the parking lot and visitor-center closing time. If using public transport or a hired car, arrange the return pickup point, waiting plan and latest pickup time in advance. If an activity closes unexpectedly, shorten your visit and return to a confirmed exit; do not look for a village road or an unlicensed ride.
Get there
Drive to the visitor center
From Huludao, Xingcheng or elsewhere, follow current navigation and road conditions on public roads to the visitor center. Slow down on mountain bends and village roads. Set your destination to the visitor center; Great Wall lines and village roads shown on a map are not scenic-area entrances. Check the operator's posted information for parking location, fees and overnight rules.
Shanhaiguan Station and a return ride
Shanhaiguan Station is in Hebei and can serve as a nearby railway arrival point, but do not assume there is a regular direct shuttle to Jiumenkou. If traveling from that station, confirm the actual journey time, round-trip price, waiting point and return-to-station arrangement with a licensed car service. Book the return ride in advance and do not use drivers soliciting passengers by the roadside.
Shuttle and walking distance
After arrival, ask the visitor center how to reach the ticket checkpoint or trailhead, including shuttle arrangements, fares and the last departure. Check whether the shuttle is required, whether a round trip uses one ticket, which walking routes are open and where to wait for the return ride. If you plan to walk, ask about distance, slope and return time first.
Know before you go
Tickets, discounts and parking
The wall, museum, tunnel and scenic-area shuttle may use separate tickets. When buying admission, check which activities are included on the same ticket and what ID is required for child, student or senior discounts. Pay parking fees according to the notices at the lot you use.
Opening hours and evening activities
For a half-day visit, check the last-entry time separately for the scenic area, wall, museum and tunnel, as well as the shuttle's last departure.
Weather, steps and the tunnel
The Great Wall has slopes, steps and exposed edges. Shorten your route in slippery or windy conditions and follow management notices. Companions who should avoid steep climbs or enclosed spaces can wait at the visitor center, museum or an open low-level viewpoint. Visitors with limited mobility should first ask the operator about accessible entrances and reachable areas.
