Plan at a glance
Street limits and entrances
Zhongshan Arcade Street runs north–south through Jieyang’s old-city core, from Zhuangyuan Fang and Wangjiang North Road in the north to Jinxian Gate Tower in the south. Zhuangyuan Fang is a practical northern starting point, while Jinxian Gate is the southern entrance. This is a public street segment, not the whole of Jieyang Ancient City.
Tickets and hours
The street is free to enter and does not require a reservation. It can be walked throughout the day. 18:00–22:00 is a useful period for the night lighting, but shops, restaurants and snack stalls set their own hours; the lighting period is not a shared opening schedule for every business.
How long to allow
Walking from the northern end to Jinxian Gate while photographing the main buildings takes about 1.5–2 hours. First-time visitors who also want to see craft shops, Datong Street, Stone Lion Bridge and Shuangfeng Temple should allow 3–4 hours, depending on stops and meals.

Five-foot arcades and Southern Seas architecture
The covered ground-floor corridors are generally around 2–3 metres wide and are known locally as “five-foot arcades”. The facades mix Baroque-style gables and European columns with Chaoshan plasterwork and ceramic mosaics. Compare both sides of the street as you walk instead of looking for only one designated photo wall.
Zhuangyuan Fang, the arcades and Jinxian Gate
At the northern end, the military scholar’s stone archway and the continuous arcade buildings create a deep street composition. In the south, the street’s long axis can frame Jinxian Gate in the distance. Light around sunset is often useful for showing the building lines, but the best viewpoint will depend on barriers and crowds that day.
Crafts, shops and daily life
The middle section includes embroidery, wood carving, paper cutting, tinware and gongfu tea experiences. It is a good place to pause or buy a small local souvenir. The street remains a public area where shops and residents share the space, so craft experiences, stock and opening hours should not be treated as fixed services.
Build your day
The 1.5–2-hour quick route
Start at Zhuangyuan Fang, photograph the archway with the arcade buildings, then follow the street to examine the five-foot corridors and the mixed architectural facades. Continue past the street installations and photo walls, and finish at Jinxian Gate for a wider view of the tower. If you need to keep the route short, leave craft shops and snacks until the end.
The 3–4-hour heritage route
A fuller order is: Jinxian Gate Tower → Jieyang Confucian Temple → Jieyang City God Temple → Zhongshan Arcade Street → Datong Street → Stone Lion Bridge → Shuangfeng Temple. This places the arcade street in the middle of a walking route where you can combine architecture, crafts and food. Each neighbouring attraction still has its own opening and etiquette requirements.
Afternoon and evening pacing
Start after 16:00 to avoid the strongest heat and use the pre-sunset light for the arcades and Jinxian Gate. After the lights come on, return to the corridors, red lanterns and street views for night photos. 18:00–22:00 is a useful photography window, but maintenance, construction and festival crowds may require a different route.
Get there
Parking outside the old city and public transport
By car, consider the large car park opposite Jinxian Gate, the underground parking at Jinxian Book City, the free car park near the law-enforcement bureau or the Confucian Temple car park, then walk into the street. A taxi from Jieyang Railway Station takes about 20 minutes. Once inside the arcade street, walking is easiest; a shared electric bicycle can connect the outer entrances, but it should not be ridden through crowded covered corridors.
Getting around the street
The street is a manageable north–south walk, and walking lets you notice changes in the facades and shops. Do not drive into the narrow lanes or ride quickly through the covered corridors. If you meet a construction barrier, follow the on-site detour instead of trying to pass through a closed section.
Know before you go
Business hours and construction
The public street can be entered throughout the day, but individual shops, restaurants, craft stores and snack stalls open and close independently. Some parts of Datong Street, the Green Lion cultural site or other old-city roads may have construction barriers. The walk usually remains possible, but leave time for detours.
Comfort and photography
The five-foot arcades provide shelter from rain, but a long walk can still feel hot in summer. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Light-coloured clothing, Hanfu or modern Chinese-style clothing works well with the red walls, glazed tiles and arcade lines; do not block shop entrances or residents’ access while taking photos.
Snacks and nearby combinations
Salted-vegetable chicken wings, Xianxing sweet soup, salted egg yolk in caramel, sugar-onion pancakes, oyster omelette and dry noodles from Axi Noodle Shop can all fit into a visit, but queues and availability change. Zhongshan Arcade Street can be combined with Jinxian Gate, the Confucian Temple, City God Temple, Datong Street, Stone Lion Bridge and Shuangfeng Temple. Treat it as one street section, not as an attraction covering the whole old city.
