Castle location and entrances
Xiangyu Ancient Castle is in Xiangyu Village, Zhengcun Town, Qinshui County, Jincheng. The East Gate, whose lintel bears the characters “Chenxun,” is the main front entrance, reached across the moat on a suspension bridge. The South Gate has a barbican. The two entrances offer different ways to read the castle, so follow the gate open that day.
Allow about 1–3 hours. A short visit covers the main street, distinctive residences, and the Hidden-Soldier Cave; a longer route adds moat views, Shuai Fu Courtyard, the Ten Great Residences, and Sandu Hall. The castle sells its own ticket and does not use the ticket or shuttle arrangements for Huangcheng Chancellor's Residence, Guoyu Ancient City, or Haihui Temple.
Tickets and timing
Adult admission is RMB 65 per person. Students and visitors aged 60–64 pay about RMB 32; visitors aged 65 or above and children under 1.2 metres are free. Concession terms follow the documents and on-site rules. Opening hours are 08:00–18:00.
Parking is about RMB 10 per visit, with stays of 30 minutes or less free. Public-transport services are limited. Tickets, parking, and guiding follow Xiangyu Ancient Castle's own arrangements, and other Yangcheng castles do not share a common ticket.

Honeycomb walls and the Hidden-Soldier Cave
Arched openings cover the castle walls and houses, creating a honeycomb-like appearance. From across the moat, photograph the overall outline; inside, look at how the openings and walls fit together. The Hidden-Soldier Cave is a three-level defensive tunnel system with about 152 connected chambers, and is the best way to understand the castle's layout.
The cave is dark and narrow, with uneven stone paving. At the entrance, judge the height, footing, and open sections before going in. Visitors with limited mobility and families with strollers can focus on the gates, main street, residences, and moat, and shorten the cave section.
Sandu Hall and the residences
Sandu Hall is one of the taller buildings in the castle and was the former residence of Sun Dingxiang. Its five floors give a view of the castle's “carp-shaped” layout. Shuai Fu Courtyard, the Ten Great Residences, and Shuang Cha-hua Courtyard add domestic spaces and different building forms; Shuang Cha-hua Courtyard has a cap-like plan, high on both sides and lower in the centre.
The far side of the moat is good for a full view and reflection. The western wall frames the mountains and sunset, while the cave openings make natural viewfinders. Architecture enthusiasts and photographers can give Sandu Hall, the wall, and the cave three separate pauses instead of rushing through the main street.

About 1–1.5 hours: short route
Enter through the East Gate, follow the main street past distinctive residences such as Shuang Cha-hua Courtyard, then enter the Hidden-Soldier Cave and leave through the West Gate or return the way you came. The route sees the above-ground residences before the underground defences, and suits a short visit or a tight public-transport return.
Before entering the tunnel, check the exit direction and open sections. Bend through low passages and slow down on wet stone. If the West Gate is closed that day, return from the East Gate to the car park or village entrance according to the on-site directions.
About 2–3 hours: highlights route
Start at the Visitor Centre and photograph the castle across the moat. Cross the East Gate bridge, visit Shuai Fu Courtyard and the Ten Great Residences, then climb the five floors of Sandu Hall for a view over the castle. Continue into the Hidden-Soldier Cave and leave through the South or East Gate. The South Gate barbican makes a useful final look at the defences; access to its upper level follows the day's arrangements.
If you use Tourist Line 8 for the outward journey, allow walking time for the main street, wall, and cave. Drivers can photograph the moat from the car park, then return to the entrance to visit the castle. This makes room for both the exterior view and the complete interior route.
Get there
High-speed rail and bus
From Jincheng Coach East Station, take Tourist Line 8 to Xiangyu Ancient Castle. The current unified fare is RMB 1. Check departures, stops, and return service in the bus notice for the day. From Gaoping East Railway Station, use a local bus or taxi according to the day's transport arrangements.
You can also go first to Gaoping East Railway Station and continue by a local bus or taxi. Arrival time affects whether you choose the short or highlights route. If return services are limited, confirm the exit and waiting point before entering.
Driving and parking
Navigate to “Xiangyu Ancient Castle.” Parking is about RMB 10 per visit, with stays of 30 minutes or less free. The castle entrance, village roads, and car park are connected by walking, and vehicles cannot enter the main street in place of the visit.
Xiangyu Ancient Castle is about 14 kilometres, or roughly a 17-minute drive, from Huangcheng Chancellor's Residence. Haihui Academy is about 4.5 kilometres away. These distances help with route planning, but tickets, opening status, and guiding are separate. Cave, gate, and wall access do not change with the neighbouring attractions.
Know before you go
Steps, tunnels, and heritage safety
The castle has many steep steps and uneven stone paths. Wear flat shoes with good grip; strollers are not suitable for the cave or steeper sections. The Hidden-Soldier Cave has limited light, so check that your phone or torch works before entering and stay on the open path.
Xiangyu Ancient Castle is a protected heritage site. Do not launch a drone without permission, climb the walls, cross barriers, or touch the walls and other heritage structures. Photograph the honeycomb wall, bridge, and cave from the open path rather than entering closed areas for a better angle.
Supplies and guiding
Shops inside the attraction are limited, so bring water and snacks. Near the entrance, you may find Qinshui shaobing, stir-fried liangfen, and sauerkraut heigeda; nearby restaurants also serve Gudao braised pork hotpot. Food is separate from admission, so take a break before the longer route.
A private guide costs about RMB 30 per visit, while the availability of a guide device follows the on-site arrangement. The honeycomb walls, Sandu Hall, and Hidden-Soldier Cave represent the outer wall, above-ground buildings, and underground passages, respectively.
