The Daxiong Hall and the Past Seven Buddhas
The Daxiong Hall is Fengguo Temple's central Liao-dynasty timber building. It is nine bays wide and five bays deep, with a single-eaved hip roof (庑殿顶). Its massive timber bracket sets and deep overhanging eaves are best viewed from the courtyard. Inside, the Past Seven Buddhas (过去七佛) are the main sculptures to see.
The Hall of the Heavenly Kings and the courtyard
The gate, Hall of the Heavenly Kings and courtyard show the transition from the temple entrance to the main hall. The red walls provide a background for photographing the buildings. A special exhibition hall has previously shown replicas of the Daxiong Hall murals and related objects; ask on arrival whether it is open and whether the exhibition is still running.
Details of the timber structure
The hall is nine bays across and five bays deep. From the courtyard, compare the platform, column grid and roofline; up close, look at how the bracket sets support the projecting eaves. Inside, follow the visitor route to see the Past Seven Buddhas and leave a clear path for other visitors.
Build your day
Short visit: about 1 hour
Enter from East Street and continue past the gate and Hall of the Heavenly Kings to the Daxiong Hall. Follow the marked route inside to see the Past Seven Buddhas. Along the central axis, notice how the entrance and front hall lead toward the main hall, then take time to look at the exterior structure and interior sculptures. Leave by the visitor exit; do not enter fenced-off or closed areas.
Longer visit: about 2–3 hours
Allow 2–3 hours to look closely at the timber buildings and courtyard, and to visit the gate, Hall of the Heavenly Kings, Daxiong Hall and any special exhibition open that day. If the exhibition hall is closed, you can still see the buildings and sculptures from the open courtyard, then follow the marked route out.
Visit nearby Yixian sites separately
Wanfotang Grottoes are about 20 km from Fengguo Temple, roughly a 30-minute drive. You must travel by road and enter the grottoes separately. If visiting both in one day, arrange the vehicle or charter-car waiting time and return journey, and check each site’s last admission time.
Guangsheng Temple Pagoda is another separate stop outside the temple grounds, with its own entrance. Map routes through Yixian’s streets vary, so use live navigation for the trip to the pagoda.
Get there
From Jinzhou to Yixian
From Jinzhou Railway Station (锦州站), take a bus or train to Yixian; the journey takes about an hour. From Yixian Railway Station (义县站), continue by local Bus 1R or taxi to the temple. Jinzhou North Railway Station (锦州北站) is a separate high-speed rail station; a taxi or shared ride from there takes about an hour and costs around CNY 100. Confirm the pickup point and fare with the driver.
Parking and transfers outside the temple
For driving, set the destination to “Fengguo Temple Car Park” (奉国寺停车场), near the East Street entrance. Wanfotang Grottoes are about 20 km away and require a separate road transfer. Guangsheng Temple Pagoda is a separate attraction in Yixian, outside the temple grounds.
