Wood, brick and stone carving
The guild hall's main interest is its wood, brick, and stone carving. Seven layers of wood carving appear beneath the main hall eaves. The screen wall has brick carving and a “two dragons playing with a pearl” stone carving, while column bases and drum-shaped gate stones show further stone-carving details.
The pai lou and old theatre stage
The pai lou has three bays, six columns, and five roof levels. Its front and rear carry plaques such as “Righteousness Reaches Heaven” and “Fame Through the Ages,” together with murals of Guan Yu stories. The old theatre stage faces the main hall and is one of Kaifeng's named historic theatre-stage highlights. It is best viewed from the central axis to understand the relationship between the buildings.

A 30–60 minute detail route
Enter from the north side of the street. Follow the central axis to the screen wall, theatre stage, and pai lou, then look at the seven layers of wood carving under the main hall eaves before continuing around to the rear hall and exit. Morning light can help with the eave and screen-wall carvings, although weather and obstructions affect the photography conditions.
This short route suits visitors who want the architectural details without a long guide session. The nodes are close together, but the carvings require time to inspect, so the actual visit length changes with photography and crowd levels.
A 1–1.5 hour guided route
If free guiding is available, follow the sequence from the entrance through the screen wall, theatre stage, pai lou, main hall, and rear hall. You can also hire a guide separately. Guide sessions are not fixed; adjust after entering according to the service available that day.
When a guide is available, note the layers of the wood carving, the locations of the brick carving, and the structure of the pai lou, then return to the main hall eaves for a closer look. The visit is centred on the surviving buildings and carvings; keep the focus on what can be seen on site.
Photography route
Use a telephoto or macro lens for the layers of wood carving under the main hall eaves. The screen wall is useful for the “two dragons playing with a pearl” carving and large brick-carved characters, while the pai lou is best photographed from farther back to show its “chicken-foot” structure. Keep the passage clear and follow the on-site photography limits.

Bus routes 1, 11, 20, 31, and 34 reach the Drum Tower Square or Xueyuan Gate areas. Walk from the stop to 85 Xufu Street. For a taxi, use “Shan-Shaan-Gan Guild Hall” as the destination and look for the north-side entrance.
Entrance recognition
The entrance is on the north side of Xufu Street and has a clear cultural-heritage building marker. The old-city roads are narrow, so a ride-hailing drop-off may still require a short walk along the street.
