Eight-Dynasty history exhibition
The Eight-Dynasty Ancient Capital History exhibition on the second floor provides a timeline for Kaifeng's urban history. A three-dimensional relief in the introductory hall shows how successive city layers were built over one another. If Kaifeng is new to you, start with this exhibition before moving to the other galleries.
Digital Qingming Scroll exhibition
The digital Qingming Scroll exhibition uses immersive interactive displays to introduce urban life in the Song dynasty through digital images. The lighting is dim, so follow the gallery's photography rules when using a camera or phone.
Who will enjoy this visit
The museum suits visitors interested in history, archaeology, and urban culture, and it works well as an indoor stop before or after outdoor sightseeing. It is in Kaifeng's newer urban area, so reaching Longting Park or Millennium City Park requires separate transport.
Build your day
A 1.5–2 hour core route
Start on the second floor with the Eight-Dynasty Ancient Capital History exhibition, then visit the digital Qingming Scroll exhibition, and finish on the first floor with the signature treasures and key relics. Moving from the second floor down to the first gives you the historical framework before you spend more time on the physical objects.
After entry, look at the galleries open that day and the reservation notices. If the digital gallery or a temporary exhibition has changed, follow the on-site route through the history exhibition and first-floor highlights. Last admission is at 16:00, so an afternoon visit should put the main second-floor galleries first.
A 2.5–3 hour extended route
Use the core route, then read the history displays and first-floor object labels at a slower pace. See whether a free timed guided session is available that day. If its time does not match your arrival, continue with the regular gallery route.
The building exterior and the water feature in front work well for photographs before or after entry. The digital gallery is suitable for silhouette or atmosphere shots. Photography rules for objects, galleries, and temporary exhibitions follow the signs on site.
Reservation-full contingency
If regular reservations are tight, see whether a special-exhibition ticket or another admission type is available for the current period, and which areas it covers. Whether a special-exhibition ticket can replace the regular reservation, which galleries it admits, and what it costs all follow the current ticket rules.
Get there
Public transport and main entrance
Bus routes 30 and K101 stop at “Kaifeng Museum” (开封博物馆站). Walk from the stop to the main entrance at the front of the building. For a taxi, use Kaifeng Museum as the destination, then enter through the reservation-check and visitor route on site.
Driving and parking
The museum has a car park. Parking fees, available spaces, and the entrance arrangement follow the on-site directions for that day. After driving there, walk to the main entrance and keep to your confirmed admission time.
Know before you go
Free admission with real-name booking
General admission is free, but a real-name reservation is still required for entry. During public holidays, view availability 3–5 days ahead. If reservations are full, look at the special-exhibition ticket or other admission arrangements for that period; a spare ticket may not be available on site.
Opening days and last admission
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00, and closed on Mondays. Public-holiday hours may change. Since no entry is allowed after 16:00, complete the second-floor history exhibition, digital gallery, and first-floor highlights before the final admission window.
Location and indoor visit
Kaifeng Museum is in the newer Zhengkai Avenue area. Replan transport when continuing to Longting, Millennium City Park, or the old city. The visit centres on galleries, digital displays, and object labels; whether a timed guide is available follows the service arranged that day.
