How to Visit
1

Treat the old city as an open walking district

Langzhong Ancient City is best approached as a walkable old-town area. The streets themselves can be entered on foot, while paid tickets mainly apply to individual sites such as Han Huanhou Temple, the Imperial Examination Hall, the Confucian Temple, Huaguang Tower, and Zhongtian Tower.

Tip:On a first visit, decide whether you want a deeper historical route or a lighter walk for food, lanes, and river views before buying multiple tickets.
2

Use half a day for the core streets

A smooth first route is to enter the main old-town area, visit Han Huanhou Temple, the Imperial Examination Hall, and the Confucian Temple area, then climb either Zhongtian Tower or Huaguang Tower.

Tip:This gives you both the cultural stops and a high viewpoint for understanding the street layout and the Jialing River.
3

Save the tower and riverside time for late afternoon

Zhongtian Tower is better for seeing the central street grid, while Huaguang Tower is better for the Jialing River and the edge of the old city.

Tip:Late afternoon light is softer, and it also makes it easier to continue to the riverside, a boat ride, or the night views around Nanjinguan.
4

Choose your depth based on one or two days

Half a day to one day is enough for the core old city. If you also want to add Jinping Mountain, White Pagoda, Tengwang Pavilion, Nanjinguan, and a river cruise, two days will feel much more comfortable.

Tip:Langzhong works best at a slow pace, not as a rushed checklist.
Highlights
  • The old city’s three-sided river setting makes it more than a normal historic street; you can clearly read the relationship between mountains, water, and the town.
  • Han Huanhou Temple, the Imperial Examination Hall, the Confucian Temple, and Chuanbei Daoshu are close enough to connect on foot.
  • Zhongtian Tower and Huaguang Tower offer two different high views: one over the central street grid, the other toward the Jialing River.
  • Guesthouses, snacks, teahouses, and local daily life still give the old city a lived-in feel.
  • Zhangfei beef, Baoning vinegar, steamed sweet buns, and local beef noodles make good short breaks during the walk.
Insider Tips

If you only want to walk, eat, and see the night scenery, you may not need a combined ticket. Compare the pass only if you plan to enter several paid sites.

Many streets are paved with stone slabs, so wear comfortable shoes. Dragging large luggage through the old city can be tiring.

During Chinese holidays, parking and old-town guesthouses can get tight, so confirm both in advance.

In the evening, it is easiest to finish near Huaguang Tower, the Jialing River, or the cruise pier.

For a first visit, do not try to cover every lane. Focus on the main cultural sites, one high viewpoint, and the riverside night scenery.
