How to Visit
1

Choose a night-view visit or a full hike

If you mainly want the city panorama and sunset, take a taxi or drive close to viewpoints such as Ertai Pavilion or Santai Pavilion. If you want to hike, start from the foot of the mountain in daylight rather than beginning a mountain route after dark.

Tip:Choose a drive-up viewpoint visit if time is limited or this is your first visit.
2

Arrive before sunset for the full change of light

Aim to arrive at the viewpoint about one hour before sunset. Use the remaining daylight to see the Yellow River, city blocks, and surrounding hills clearly. Stay through sunset until the city lights settle in.

Tip:Leave soon after your photos rather than staying until very late, when transport becomes less convenient.
3

Allow enough time and energy for a daytime hike

A hike includes stairs, slopes, and mountain paths, so do not estimate it like a flat city-park walk. In daylight, pause at the viewpoints and use a normal route to descend; turn back promptly if conditions worsen or you feel tired.

Tip:Allow 1.5-2.5 hours uphill. Do not hike if you do not know the route, are travelling alone, if the ground is wet, or if daylight is running out.
4

Arrange your downhill transport before you need it

Weekend, holiday, and popular night-view periods can mean waiting for parking, taxis, or shared rides. Before going up, identify where a driver can collect you and keep a backup transport plan.

Tip:Bring a light jacket even on summer evenings. Stay on paved paths and designated viewpoints; do not cross barriers or walk onto unpaved slopes.
Highlights
  • Areas around Ertai Pavilion and Santai Pavilion look across Lanzhou, with the Yellow River running through the city.
  • The period from sunset to the first city lights gives the clearest contrast between the urban skyline and surrounding hills.
  • Visitors who do not want a long hike can still enjoy the view with only a short walk from the upper parking areas.
  • A daytime climb gives fitter visitors a more complete view of Lanzhou as a mountain city.
  • The open viewpoints suit city panoramas, night photography, and long-distance views.
Insider Tips

The night view is worth the trip, but a safe descent and reliable transport matter more than staying for a few extra photos.

Weekends, holidays, and clear evenings bring larger crowds, so allow time for parking and ride-hailing.

It is usually windier and cooler above the city; bring a light layer in summer and warmer clothing in spring or autumn.

Do not hike after rain, snow, ice, or in strong wind. A short drive-up viewpoint visit is the safer alternative.

Never climb over barriers, step onto slopes, or enter vehicle areas for a photo.
