How to Visit
1

Decide your walking plan and return time at the foot of the mountain

Enter from the foothill entrance on the north side of the Yellow River. Visit in daylight or start well before sunset, then assess your group's fitness before committing to the full climb.

Tip:The park is built around mountain paths and stairs. Do not begin the climb when there are fewer than 90 minutes of daylight left, because the descent also needs time.
2

Climb steadily on the main stone stair route

Follow the main path uphill at a controlled pace instead of rushing continuously. Pause briefly at wider sections, drink water, and then continue.

Tip:The stairs are continuous and involve real elevation gain. Starting too fast often leaves visitors tired before reaching the upper viewpoints; supportive, non-slip footwear matters more than lightweight shoes.
3

Use the mid-slope buildings and shaded sections to manage your pace

As you pass pavilions, halls, and tree-lined stretches, use a simple rhythm of short stop, then continue uphill. There is no need to spend a long time at every building.

Tip:These sections help distribute effort and gradually open up the views. Leaving the main path to take shortcuts can lead to slips, confusion, or unnecessary backtracking.
4

Complete the main visit around the White Pagoda and upper viewpoints

See the pagoda and nearby historic buildings first, then move to an open viewpoint for the Yellow River and city panorama. Return to the main path after taking photos.

Tip:This is the best-view section of the route and the easiest place to lose track of time. If you are staying for late-afternoon light, start descending while the path is still clearly visible.
5

Descend on the main route and leave from the foothill area

Use a familiar main path for the descent, then arrange food, transport, or your next stop after reaching the bottom.

Tip:Long flights of downhill stairs can be harder on the knees than the ascent. Take shorter steps, use handrails where needed, and do not rush after rain or in icy conditions.
Highlights
  • White Pagoda Mountain combines a climb, historic buildings, and broad Yellow River city views in one mountain route.
  • The White Pagoda is a major visual landmark on Lanzhou's north bank.
  • Views of the river, bridges, and city expand gradually as you gain height.
  • Pavilions, halls, and shaded paths make the climb more than a direct uphill walk.
  • It suits travellers looking for a light-to-moderate urban hike.
Insider Tips

Allow at least 1.5-2 hours, with additional time for rests and the descent if needed.

The upper slopes can be windy even in summer, so bring a light outer layer.

Stone stairs can be slippery after rain; do not go too deep into the park with poor-grip footwear.

Families with very young children, strollers, or knee problems should shorten the route rather than forcing a summit visit.

For an evening visit, make a safe descent the priority over waiting for a later view.
