How to Visit
1

Confirm daily opening and whether both peaks can be linked

Xinglongshan's main areas are East Xinglong Peak and West Qiyun Peak. Entry, parking, cableway service and access to individual trails may differ.

Tip:Do not plan on completing both peaks by default. Decide whether to visit one peak or link both only after confirming the day's operating conditions.
2

Make walking the main plan and treat the cableway as optional

If the cableway is operating, it can reduce some climbing or provide a return option. If it is not operating, your route should still be manageable as an out-and-back walk.

Tip:Do not rely on the final cableway as your only way down, and do not rush downhill on mountain paths to catch it.
3

Choose one peak and control the total ascent

Most visitors should choose one peak, its main historic buildings and viewpoints, then return by the same route. Fit and experienced walkers can consider combining the two.

Tip:Steps, gradients and downhill sections put more strain on knees than many visitors expect. Grip matters more than lightweight-looking footwear.
4

Use Yunlong Bridge, Taibai Spring and forest paths as route anchors

On open routes, use the bridge, spring, woodland and historic buildings as natural pacing points rather than trying to cover every listed stop.

Tip:Individual roads, bridges and ridgeline paths can change because of rain, thunderstorms, strong wind, snow, ice or maintenance.
5

Leave a conservative buffer before descending

Reduce your ascent target in the afternoon so you can return to the entrance or transport hub in daylight while services are still running.

Tip:Do not expect city-park levels of signal, supplies or public transport in the reserve. Carry water, simple snacks and a warm layer.
Highlights
  • Xinglong Peak and Qiyun Peak face each other across a valley, creating the reserve's clearest twin-peak landscape.
  • Yunlong Bridge is one of the best-known landmarks between the peaks and works well as a viewpoint on open trails.
  • Taibai Spring, forest paths and mountain buildings make the visit more than a straightforward summit walk.
  • The wooded slopes and cooler feel make Xinglongshan a useful near-Lanzhou option for summer relief and autumn walking.
  • The reserve's wildlife and plant life are best appreciated quietly, without chasing or feeding animals.
Insider Tips

Admission, opening hours and services may differ between the East and West Mountain areas. Leave enough time to settle your preferred route and return plan on arrival.

Plan around the two peaks, forest paths and Yunlong Bridge. Use the cableway only when it is operating, and choose a walking route you can complete without it.

It is usually cooler and windier on the mountain than in Lanzhou. Carry a light layer in summer and prepare for lower temperatures and slippery ground in autumn and winter.

Do not persist with high, narrow or steep routes in thunderstorms, fog, strong wind, ice or snow. Turning back is the normal safe choice.

Keep your distance from wildlife; do not feed animals or pursue them for photographs, and carry all rubbish out of the reserve.
