Plan at a glance

A gorge walk beside Zhutan Mountain

Furong Gorge lies in the eastern part of Xiandu Scenic Area in Jinyun County, beside Zhutan Mountain, and is also called Tiecheng. The usual approach begins at the Zhutan Mountain entrance: follow the streamside path past Lovers’ Bridge to the gorge entrance. Inside, the cliffs rise steeply beside the path, which passes cliff inscriptions and steps leading to Wangfeng Pavilion. Add it as a walking section after Zhutan Mountain.

Allow 30–45 minutes to reach Wangfeng Pavilion, view the gorge and return. For the deeper gorge path and the Tiecheng inscription, allow 1.5–2 hours. Furong Gorge is covered by the CNY 90 two-day Xiandu pass; scenic-bus transport costs a separate CNY 20, making the combined budget CNY 110. It usually operates from 07:30 to 17:30. Ticketing and opening arrangements follow the product and route in place that day.

Who it suits and the walking involved

Furong Gorge suits visitors who want to move from Zhutan Mountain’s level water views to a gorge path, and who enjoy cliff faces and carved inscriptions. It has more steps than Zhutan Mountain. With children or older relatives, walk only the first section and Wangfeng Pavilion rather than forcing a complete gorge route at speed.

Visitors who want to avoid the crowds in Dinghu Peak’s core area while keeping a section of valley walking may enjoy this stop. If companions only want the Zhutan Mountain reflection or do not suit stairs, make Furong Gorge an optional add-on rather than forcing it into a compressed half day.

Tiecheng inscription and gorge depth

The Tiecheng cliff inscription near the gorge entrance is the cultural anchor here, while the gorge path gives views of the two cliff faces and stream. Wangfeng Pavilion is higher up and looks across the gorge layers. With limited time, the inscription and pavilion are the representative elements; decide whether to go farther into the gorge based on your energy.

The experience is about a gorge walk and cliff perspective, unlike Zhutan Mountain’s bridge, stream and distant Dinghu Peak. For wider images, Wangfeng Pavilion works with a wide-angle view down the gorge. Even if you are not taking photos, leave time for the return steps and walk back.

Pairing it with Zhutan Mountain and Niweng Cave

Furong Gorge and Zhutan Mountain fit naturally into the same part of the day: Zhutan Mountain gives water and distant views, and Furong Gorge adds a valley walk. Niweng Cave can follow later to create a water-view, walking and inscription-cave combination, but doing all three adds transfer time and walking.

With only half a day at Xiandu, Zhutan Mountain and Furong Gorge are enough. Add Niweng Cave only if you want an indoor or cultural stop. Do not force several places into a loop and miss the last scenic bus or arrive close to closing.

Build your day

30–45 minutes: Wangfeng Pavilion after Zhutan Mountain

From the Zhutan Mountain entrance, follow the streamside path past Lovers’ Bridge into Furong Gorge. Walk to Wangfeng Pavilion for the gorge and cliff view, then return the same way. This short route works after early Zhutan Mountain photography and also suits visitors who want to save energy for Dinghu Peak or Little Red Cliff.

At Wangfeng Pavilion, judge your group’s energy and available time before continuing. If the steps are already tiring, return from there; a short distance on the map does not include the descent, waiting for transport and the walk back to the Zhutan Mountain stop.

1.5–2 hours: go deeper into the gorge

Start from the Zhutan Mountain entrance, pass Lovers’ Bridge into the gorge, pause at the Tiecheng inscription, then follow the path farther in before reaching Wangfeng Pavilion and returning the same way. The early section centres on the inscription and the later section on the gorge; the return can give you a different angle on the cliff light.

If Niweng Cave is also on the day’s plan, keep the gorge section in the earlier afternoon and use scenic transport for the next stop. Do not try to walk continuously from the gorge to other Xiandu attractions: the dispersed stops take more time than they appear to.

Get there

Start at Zhutan Mountain and walk in

Out-of-town visitors can first reach Jinyun West Station or Lishui Station, then use Bus K66 or a tourist shuttle to the Xiandu Visitor Centre. From there, take the sightseeing bus to Zhutan Mountain. There is no metro connection, so do not build the plan around finding a car between stops at the last minute.

From the Zhutan Mountain entrance, follow the streamside path past Lovers’ Bridge to find the Furong Gorge entrance. Before entering, confirm the direction back and the day’s last scenic-bus service, especially in the afternoon, so you do not reach the deeper gorge with too little time for the transfer.

Driving and moving inside the scenic area

Drivers should park at Xiandu Scenic Area Visitor Centre, then take the sightseeing bus in. Internal roads and walking paths serve different purposes, and leaving the car at the Visitor Centre makes it easier to adjust the order of Zhutan Mountain, Furong Gorge and the next stop.

The Furong Gorge entrance is reached on foot; scenic transport does not replace the steps inside the gorge. Wear shoes suitable for walking and carry water. If anyone has knee problems, stay at Zhutan Mountain or keep to the first part of the gorge.

Know before you go

Steps, weather and the return

There is a long section of steps inside the gorge, and rock and paths are slippery after rain. Wear non-slip shoes, do not stop in narrow sections for photographs, and do not climb beyond barriers towards the cliff or stream. Morning and evening light is softer, but return timing matters more than photographs.

Official scenic-transport stops are more dependable than vehicles soliciting by the roadside. On holidays especially, entering from Zhutan Mountain station and leaving time to return to the Visitor Centre is safer than looking for a car at the gorge exit.

Tickets, supplies and route choices

Furong Gorge is entered with the CNY 90 two-day Xiandu pass, while the scenic bus costs a separate CNY 20. If Dinghu Peak, Zhutan Mountain or Niweng Cave are also on the day’s plan, do the ticket-checking stops earlier and understand the pass validity and transport arrangement in one go.

Nearby you can have simple food such as Jinyun baked flatbread, pounded-meat soup or Tushuang noodles, but the gorge itself is not a place for a long meal. Carry enough water. In hot weather, reduce the length of continuous stair climbing and make the inscription and Wangfeng Pavilion your priorities.
