Area, entry points and timing
Xiandu Scenic Area is in Xiandu Subdistrict, Jinyun County, Lishui. Most visitors begin at the Xiandu Visitor Centre, though you can also enter around Zhutan Mountain or Dinghu Peak. The area is spread out: Zhutan Mountain, Dinghu Peak, Huangdi Shrine, Niweng Cave, Yandang Bookstore and Little Red Cliff are separated by some distance. Allow at least half a day for a first visit, or a full day if you want to cover the main stops.
The two-day Xiandu pass is CNY 90. Scenic-bus transport costs a separate CNY 20, making the combined budget CNY 110; the bus can also be used repeatedly over two days and runs about every 15 minutes. Some platforms may show advance-purchase pass discounts, so check whether transport is separate. Ticketed sights generally operate from about 07:30 to 17:30, while the outer parts of the area can be visited throughout the day. Allow 3–4 hours if you only want the reflections at Zhutan Mountain and a walk at Little Red Cliff; a full day is more comfortable for linking the main stops.
How this visit works best
Xiandu works well as a day of natural scenery, short walks and several scattered stops. Photographers should put Zhutan Mountain early and Little Red Cliff in the afternoon. Families with older relatives or children can keep the day to Zhutan Mountain, Dinghu Peak and one indoor or rest stop, without trying to cover every sight.
If you are arriving by high-speed rail, make Jinyun West Station your destination. A taxi from Jinyun West to the Xiandu Visitor Centre takes about 20 minutes and costs CNY 30–40. Lishui Station is substantially farther away and is not the practical rail base for Xiandu.

Zhutan Mountain and Dinghu Peak for the classic landscape
The stream, stone bridge and reflection of Dinghu Peak at Zhutan Mountain make this the best early-morning landscape stop in Xiandu. Dinghu Peak is a natural stone pillar about 170 metres high. Seeing it close up inside its own area feels quite different from viewing it across the water at Zhutan Mountain; if you have time for only one landscape photo stop, give that time to Zhutan Mountain.
Huangdi Shrine near Dinghu Peak is a useful addition if you want to combine natural scenery with a cultural stop. Zhutan Mountain sometimes has a photo arrangement with an old farmer leading a buffalo, but it is not a daily scheduled performance, so do not build a fixed itinerary around it.
Add Yandang Bookstore and Little Red Cliff in the afternoon
Yandang Bookstore occupies a converted quarry space and is best visited from midday into early afternoon on a clear day, when the light reaches the interior. Little Red Cliff is about its cliffside walkway, tunnel through the mountain and the Hao Stream valley; going later in the afternoon makes both walking and photography more comfortable as the light softens.
Travellers who enjoy landscape and photography can link these stops into a full day. If you do not want long periods on foot, choose Zhutan Mountain and Dinghu Peak, then use scenic transport between them. Summer sun is strong, so families with children or older relatives should split outdoor sections and use midday for a meal or rest.
Build your day
Full-day route: Zhutan Mountain first, then west through the area
Start at Zhutan Mountain in the morning, using the waterside viewpoints for Dinghu Peak, the stone bridge and the stream. Continue to Dinghu Peak and allow about two hours for the main area and Huangdi Shrine. Have lunch around Xuanyuan Culture Street, then go on to Niweng Cave and Yandang Bookstore, keeping Little Red Cliff for the afternoon.
This order separates the early light needed at Zhutan Mountain from the late-afternoon light at Little Red Cliff, with Dinghu Peak and indoor stops providing a break in between. Huangdi Shrine, Niweng Cave and similar stops approach closing time as the afternoon progresses, so visit them before Little Red Cliff if you want to enter.
Half-day route: keep the two essential views
With only half a day, begin at Zhutan Mountain. After photographing the Dinghu Peak reflection, continue to the outer area or main section of Dinghu Peak, then use scenic transport to reach Yandang Bookstore. Finish at Little Red Cliff with part of Longgeng Road or the riverside greenway. Do not rely on walking to link every stop: the distances between sights will use up too much energy.
If you are staying in a guesthouse within the scenic area and driving, the accommodation may be able to help arrange vehicle entry. Other drivers are better off parking at the Visitor Centre and switching to scenic transport, which also makes it easier to adjust time spent at each stop.
Get there
Entering from Jinyun West Station
Jinyun West Station is the main rail arrival point for out-of-town visitors to Xiandu. Take a taxi to the Visitor Centre, a journey of about 20 minutes. Once there, confirm that day's scenic-transport stops and last services before deciding whether to begin at Zhutan Mountain or Dinghu Peak.
Xiandu has no metro. There is a scenic-bus option that can be used repeatedly over two days, as well as short-distance electric two-wheel services. For first-time visitors or groups with mixed walking ability, use the scenic bus for transfers and save your walking for the riverbanks, walkways and carved-stone areas you actually want to see.
Starting at the Visitor Centre is more reliable for drivers
Navigate to Xiandu Scenic Area Visitor Centre for its large car park. Daytime access to internal scenic roads is managed. Guests with accommodation inside the area can confirm vehicle registration with their host in advance; if you do not have an internal parking arrangement, transfer from the Visitor Centre instead.
Roads and visitor flows both slow down on public holidays. If Little Red Cliff is on your afternoon plan, leave time for transfers and finding your return transport, rather than saving the final walkway for after dark.
Know before you go
Tickets, performances and closing times
Ticketed Xiandu stops are entered with the two-day pass, while scenic-bus transport is bought separately. If you buy both, budget CNY 110. Online tickets can usually be bought in advance, but once at the Visitor Centre, follow the day's normal entry and transport arrangement rather than skipping regular entry or transport steps for photos.
The old-farmer-and-buffalo scene is sometimes a paid arrangement organised by photographers and sometimes appears on weekends or public holidays. Treat it as an extra if you happen to see it. If you want to enter Huangdi Shrine, Niweng Cave or other indoor or ticketed stops, do not leave them until late afternoon: some stop receiving visitors around 17:00–17:30.
Footwear, supplies and weather
Walking at Xiandu is not limited to mountain paths: transfers between dispersed sights also add up. Wear non-slip shoes, and bring sun protection, insect repellent and water in summer. Stone steps, walkways and riverside paths are all more slippery after rain.
Food choices inside the scenic area are limited and relatively expensive. Xuanyuan Culture Street is a better place to settle lunch or dinner. On public holidays, arrive at Zhutan Mountain early, when parking, transfers and viewpoints are easier to manage than later in the day.
