Plan at a glance
Xiandu's reflection viewpoint
Zhutan Mountain is inside Xiandu Scenic Area. Its defining view is the stream, stone bridge and distant Dinghu Peak. It works as a short stop or the first stop on a full Xiandu day. If you want just one classic landscape image, allow 30–40 minutes for the waterside viewpoint.
From 23 July to 31 August, opening hours are 07:30–17:30; at other times they are about 08:00–17:00. Zhutan Mountain is covered by the Xiandu pass. Buy tickets and enter through the normal arrangement in place that day, rather than basing a photography plan on unofficial ways of getting in.
Who will enjoy it
Zhutan Mountain suits landscape photographers, visitors who want a distant view of Dinghu Peak, and anyone looking for a gentle walk. The main viewpoint area is not demanding on foot, so it can work for older relatives and children too, though early mornings and holidays are busy and need some extra time.
It pairs naturally with Dinghu Peak: Zhutan Mountain gives the distant view and reflection, while Dinghu Peak gives the close pillar and nearby cultural sights. Zhutan Mountain also works on its own, especially for a short itinerary or weather that is good for photographing the water.

Stream, bridge and Dinghu Peak
From across the stream, the stone bridge, Dinghu Peak and water can sit in one frame. Reflections are more complete when the water is still or there is morning mist, but the bridge and pillar are still worth a pause without mist.
The point here is not a dense collection of sights, but the changing layers of one viewpoint as the light changes. Photographers can stay longer; visitors not taking photos only need to walk to the main viewpoint and do not need to take a long detour.
About the old farmer leading a buffalo
An old farmer in a rain cape leading a buffalo across the bridge sometimes appears as a photography arrangement. It is not a fixed daily scenic-area programme: it may be separately arranged by photographers on ordinary days, and it may have on-site sessions on weekends or public holidays. Stay if you happen to encounter it, but do not reserve time or wait around specifically for it.
For portraits, placing people, bridge, peak and water in one frame works well, and a low camera angle makes it easier to keep the reflection. Zhutan Mountain is also good after rain clears, but the riverside is slippery, so protect both your equipment and your footwear.
Build your day
Short-stop route: go straight to the viewpoint
Enter from the Zhutan Mountain entrance, follow the path to the main waterside viewpoint, photograph Dinghu Peak, the stone bridge and the reflection, then return the same way. This section usually takes 30–40 minutes and is easy to follow with Dinghu Peak next, or Little Red Cliff later in the day.
If the water, mist or photography arrangement is worth waiting for, extend the stop to about an hour. Companions who are not taking photos can rest near the viewpoint; there is no need to spend extra time trying to walk an entire circuit.
Half-day route with Dinghu Peak
After the distant view at Zhutan Mountain, use the scenic transfer or normal walking route to Dinghu Peak and complete the main-area section that requires entry and ticket checks. In the afternoon, choose Niweng Cave, Yandang Bookstore or Little Red Cliff according to your energy. This keeps the soft morning light for Zhutan Mountain and avoids being pressed by scenic-area closing times.
Use scenic transport to link the dispersed stops and save energy. If you only have a half day at Xiandu, Zhutan Mountain and Dinghu Peak are the most dependable pair; there is no need to pack in too many further stops.
Get there
From Jinyun West Station and the Visitor Centre
After arriving at Jinyun West Station, take a scenic-area direct bus or a taxi to the Xiandu Visitor Centre, then transfer to scenic transport for Zhutan Mountain. Drivers should also park at the Visitor Centre first. On holidays, changing there is more dependable than searching for a car near the scenic area.
Internal scenic roads are managed during the day. If you are staying inside the area or have arranged internal parking, confirm vehicle registration with the relevant business in advance. Otherwise, use the Visitor Centre and scenic bus as your transport anchor.
How to plan the walking on site
The core Zhutan Mountain viewpoint section is short. The time-consuming part is transferring to other Xiandu sights. Save your energy for riverside photography and later stops such as Dinghu Peak and Little Red Cliff, rather than taking unfamiliar village roads or riverside shortcuts to save a few minutes.
Roads near Zhutan Mountain are narrow, and rain or early-morning visibility also affects driving. Parking at the Visitor Centre and transferring from there is easier than repeatedly moving the car.
Know before you go
Arrive early, but enter during normal opening hours
Zhutan Mountain is best entered early in its published opening period, when the light is softer and the riverside is quieter. Opening times change by season, so time your arrival around the seasonal hours listed on this page rather than assuming an unconfirmed early-entry option.
There is no guaranteed time for the old-farmer-and-buffalo scene, and it is not worth buying unknown services just for it. If it is crowded, photograph the mountain, bridge and reflection first, then decide whether waiting makes sense; that is better than spending the whole morning at one point.
Riverside photography and rests
Riverside paths, stone steps and walkways become slippery after rain. Wear non-slip shoes, and do not go beyond barriers or onto wet ground by the water for photos. Bring sun protection and insect repellent in summer; on cool or misty mornings, carry a light outer layer.
You can eat around Xuanyuan Culture Street, or make Zhutan Mountain your first stop after breakfast. If anyone in the group has limited mobility, park at the Visitor Centre and use the transfer to reduce narrow-road parking and long walking.
