Plan at a glance

A short stop below the red cliff

Xiandu Taoist Temple, also called Zhaohou Shrine, is inside Xiandu Scenic Area in Jinyun County. Its entrance is beside a branch from the main road: follow the stone steps beneath the red cliff. The small complex joins buildings, a natural cave and the cliff face. It normally takes 10–15 minutes to see, or about 2 easy hours when paired with Little Red Cliff.

Opening times are described as both 07:30–17:30 and 08:00–17:00, so arrive according to that day’s scenic-area route rather than leaving this stop for a rushed final transfer. It is covered by the CNY 90 two-day Xiandu pass, while the scenic bus costs a separate CNY 20. Check your product’s coverage and validity when buying.

Who should add this stop

Xiandu Taoist Temple suits visitors interested in Taoist buildings, cave-and-cliff settings and film locations. It is also a useful short cultural pause between outdoor stops such as Dinghu Peak and Zhutan Mountain. Walking is limited, but there are stone steps at the entrance; with older visitors or children, treat it as a short visit rather than a demanding hike.

If you only want the river valley and walkway, Little Red Cliff works on its own. Add the temple when you also want a building and cave space along the same part of the route. The two stops are close but have different focuses, so a tight schedule can use either one on its own.

Temple, cave and cliff

The Taoist buildings beneath the cliff, Zhaoyin Cave and its eight stone figures of medical masters are the main sights. The main hall, red cliff face and daylight at the cave opening create the essential visual layers for visitors interested in architecture and mountain spaces. This is not a museum that needs a long visit; the relationship between the building and cave is the point.

Zhaoyin Cave sits beside the main hall and cliff as part of the short visit. When the cave is busy, stay around the hall and cliff until the passage clears, then enter. Film-location information can help you recognise a scene, but do not wait in a narrow place trying to recreate one image.

Photography and an easy visit

The shrine gate, corridor below the red cliff, cave light and side doorway of the main hall are useful places to stop for photographs. Keep stairs and doorways clear when taking portraits. Cave light changes with the weather, so work with the effect on the day.

Visitors who are not taking photographs can follow the main path through the hall and Zhaoyin Cave, then continue to Little Red Cliff. If you want Taoist architecture and the cultural stops around Dinghu Peak on the same day, make this a short pause and keep the main visiting time for Dinghu Peak and Yellow Emperor Shrine.

Build your day

About two hours: temple and Little Red Cliff

Take scenic transport from the Visitor Centre to the Xiandu Taoist Temple stop. Use the stone steps for a short visit through the hall, red cliff and Zhaoyin Cave, then walk or take transport to Little Red Cliff. At Little Red Cliff, choose the riverside greenway or Longgeng Road according to your energy. This route suits visitors with limited time who want both a building and a river valley.

The temple itself takes only about 10–15 minutes, so do not spend most of the visit at the entrance taking photos. If you plan to walk the Little Red Cliff walkway later that day, confirm transfers and descent time in advance; the sections without night lighting need to be finished before dark.

Half day: Dinghu Peak through to the temple

With more time, start at Dinghu Peak from the Visitor Centre, then transfer to Zhutan Mountain after the main-area visit, continue to Xiandu Taoist Temple, and finish at Little Red Cliff. This order puts Dinghu Peak, which needs to be entered during operating hours, first and still leaves room for afternoon cliff light at Little Red Cliff.

The old-farmer-and-buffalo photo arrangement is not a fixed part of Xiandu Taoist Temple, so do not compress the temple stop to chase a particular session. If companions do not want to walk the cliffside route, return from the temple by scenic transport instead.

Get there

High-speed rail, Visitor Centre and scenic bus

From Jinyun West Station, a taxi to Xiandu Scenic Area takes about 30 minutes. At the Visitor Centre, use the scenic bus to transfer between sights. The pass covers ticketed attractions and the scenic bus is bought separately, so confirm the transport coverage for the product you choose that day.

Xiandu Taoist Temple has no metro connection and does not need a complicated external entrance. Navigate to “Xiandu Taoist Temple” or “Xiandu Scenic AreaXiandu Taoist Temple”, then follow the main road and on-site signs to the stone steps below the red cliff.

Parking and short-distance walking

Daytime drivers are better off using the designated parking area at the Visitor Centre, then changing to scenic transport. Internal roads in the scenic area are managed, so do not look for an ad-hoc vehicle service to enter the core area if you do not have an internal parking arrangement.

You can walk or use a transfer between Xiandu Taoist Temple and Little Red Cliff. Travel light and wear non-slip shoes if you only plan this short section. If you are coming from Dinghu Peak, use the scenic bus for the main transfer rather than spending your energy on the road.

Know before you go

Times, tickets and the performance

Xiandu Taoist Temple follows the scenic-area route and is busier on holidays. Passes, age concessions and whether an advance reservation is needed depend on the product you buy, so read the applicable conditions for that day. Where different opening hours are listed, follow the day’s entry arrangement.

The live Xuanyuan Praise performance does not run on Mondays and usually has Tuesday-to-Sunday morning sessions. If it is central to your visit, use the day’s schedule. The shrine buildings and cave can still be visited through the normal route even when no performance is running.

Steps, mosquitoes and food

The entrance steps, cave opening and edges below the cliff are more slippery after rain. Wear shoes with good grip and do not go beyond barriers for photographs. Mosquitoes are common in the mountains during summer. A short visit does not need much equipment, but take water and sun protection if you are continuing to the Little Red Cliff walkway.

There are food choices near the Dinghu Peak exit and Xuanyuan Culture Street, while the temple itself is not a place for a long meal. If Yellow Emperor Shrine or other ticketed stops are on the same day, complete them before the end of visitor reception, then keep Xiandu Taoist Temple or Little Red Cliff as the more flexible final section.
