Plan at a glance

Rammed-earth houses, not a large attraction complex

Yangjiatang Village is in Sandu Township, Songyang County. Its layered yellow rammed-earth houses, Couple Trees and village viewpoint are the focus. Entry is free, no booking is needed and the village is open all day; allow 30–60 minutes for the main road and viewpoint, or 2–3 hours for lanes, house exteriors and a tea stop.

It suits visitors who want mountain-village architecture, changing light and a short walk. It has fewer activities and shops than a major scenic area; pair it with Songzhuang or Chenjiapu Village for a fuller Songyang village day.

Free entry can still involve a shuttle transfer

Navigate to Yangjiatang Village. Cars can usually approach the Couple Trees, but busy dates may bring traffic control 1.5–2 kilometres below the village, with a shuttle or walk required. The shuttle is about CNY 10 per person when operating, subject to that day's arrangement.

Free entry still needs time in the schedule. Arrive before the intended afternoon photography window, and count queuing, the uphill transfer and the trip down; a daylight return is a much safer default.

Choose your visit

Read the village from the Couple Trees upward

The two interwoven old camphor trees at the entrance are known as the Couple Trees and make a clear starting point. The stone main road passes the Song clan hall, village museum and Dide School; the important visual is the way yellow walls and dark roofs step up the slope.

The viewpoint gives the best overall reading of the settlement before you explore any lane. Many rammed-earth houses are homes, so stay on public paths and view them from outside rather than entering yards without permission.

Morning trees, late-afternoon village walls

Morning light is softer for portraits and the roots of the Couple Trees. After about 4:00 pm, low sun warms the rammed-earth walls and suits the village panorama; neither light window is worth missing a safe shuttle or mountain-road return.

Use the public viewpoint for roof layers, and use open sections of the main road for walls, doors and eaves. In narrow lanes, keep a clear passage and avoid lingering beside residents' windows.

Build your day

The dependable 30–60-minute route

Enter near the Couple Trees, follow the main stone road uphill past the village museum and Song clan hall, pause at the viewpoint, then return the same way. It is short, legible and easy to reverse if traffic control requires a prompt return to the shuttle point.

The road slopes upward. Visitors with pushchairs, limited mobility or tired legs can stay around the lower village and the trees; the essential experience is the layered village view, not reaching every upper lane.

A slower 2–3-hour village pause

With more time, use open lanes below the viewpoint to observe rammed-earth walls, roofs and small village spaces, then rest at a tea room or shop. Before taking a side lane, check that it is open and that it leads back to the main road; this is a mountain village, not a maze to conquer.

If Songzhuang is also on the day, give Yangjiatang the later light and keep Songzhuang for streamside walking in daytime. The mountain road between them also takes time, so avoid extending Yangjiatang into a night drive.

Get there

Drive for flexibility, not for the deepest parking spot

Driving is the most flexible option, but the approach from Songyang is winding and village parking is limited. When access is permitted, park in the designated area and walk the main road; do not repeatedly manoeuvre on tight lanes to get closer to the Couple Trees.

If staff direct cars to a lower transfer point, note the parking location, return-shuttle point and last-service advice. Parking farther away is not lost sightseeing; it reduces congestion and keeps energy for the village slope.

Arrange transport before travelling without a car

Regular public transport to Yangjiatang is inconvenient. Visitors without a car should pre-arrange a hired vehicle, or combine it with Chenjiapu and Songzhuang in one vehicle plan; a taxi that brings you uphill may not be quickly available for the return.

Build slack into a driver's pickup time for holiday transfers and an extended photo stop. If weather turns or traffic control lengthens, shorten photography rather than leaving a return car waiting at the mountain entrance.

Know before you go

Bring supplies and choose practical footwear

Food, shops and supplies in the village are limited, so bring water, a light snack and insect repellent before heading uphill. Tea fields and slopes offer uneven shade; early arrival or a later-afternoon visit is more comfortable in summer heat.

Stone paths and earthen edges are slippery after rain. Wear grippy shoes, keep off soft slopes and do not climb over barriers or press against old walls for photographs.

Fit it into a realistic village day

Yangjiatang and Songzhuang make a good half-day Sandu itinerary: Yangjiatang for layered earthen houses and warm afternoon light, Songzhuang for its stream and stone bridge. Adding Chenjiapu also means adding its transfer timing, which should take priority in the plan.

Eat in Songyang County town or at a village place that is clearly open. On public holidays, limit the day to two villages so each keeps its own light and walking time rather than losing the whole day to shuttles and mountain roads.
