Plan at a glance

Two different visiting layers

Luoyi Ancient City is at the intersection of Jiudu East Road and Liulin Street, the Old Town District of Luoyang. It has a free-access area and the separately ticketed “Tiangong Chaoyin” music show. The free area requires a real-name reservation through the official WeChat account or mini program for Luoyi Ancient City, with entry by QR code or identification. The reference price for the music show is CNY 29.9 per person; confirm it under the current ticketing rules.

Entrances, hours and reservations

The North Gate is near the metro and Lijing Gate, making it suitable for public transport and an Old Town route. The South Gate has a parking lot and is near Wenfeng Pagoda and Xintan. The free area can generally be visited throughout the day, but shops, attractions and performances are concentrated between 09:00 and 22:30. Crowds may be controlled on weekends and public holidays, so completing the reservation and entering before 16:00 is recommended.

How much time to allow

Allow about 1–1.5 hours for Liulin Street, Wenfeng Pagoda, Xintan and Zhuangyuan Bridge; allow about 2–3 hours if adding historic sites, “Fairy Scattering Flowers” and Tiangong Chaoyin. Luoyi Ancient City, Lijing Gate and Sui and Tang Grand Canal Culture Museum can be connected on foot, but their reservations, fees and opening hours are independent.

Choose your visit

Wenfeng Pagoda, Xintan and the old-city lanes

Wenfeng Pagoda is the main landmark of the ancient city. Xintan, the waterside corridor and Zhuangyuan Bridge are suitable for views of reflections of the water and historic buildings. Liulin Street, the ruins of Luoyang’s Jin-Yuan city and the Fuwen Temple are better for visitors who want to walk through old-city relics and street life.

Performances and evening activities

Xintan may host live performances such as “Fairy Scattering Flowers,” while the separately ticketed “Tiangong Chaoyin” is a guochao music show. Performance times, viewing areas and whether a show is operating depend on the program for that day. Free entry does not include paid performances.

Who this suits

Visitors interested in evening walks, traditional-style photography, hanfu experiences and city lanes can enter in the afternoon and stay into the evening. Families and younger visitors can choose the lakeside, historic sites or performances according to their interests. Decide how long to stay for Tiangong Chaoyin and other programs based on the session time.

Build your day

1–1.5 hours: Ancient-city walking route

Enter through the North Gate and follow the main stretch of Liulin Street to Wenfeng Pagoda and Xintan for photographs, then leave via Zhuangyuan Bridge. The North Gate is convenient for continuing to Lijing Gate and Shizi Street, while the South Gate suits the parking lot and Wenfeng Pagoda side.

2–3 hours: Afternoon into night

Enter through the South or North Gate at around 16:00. First see the ruins of Luoyang’s Jin-Yuan city and Fuwen Temple, then wait by Xintan for programs such as “Fairy Scattering Flowers.” Continue to Dianjiang Square. If you have bought a Tiangong Chaoyin ticket, enter at the scheduled time shown in the program. After leaving, see Wenfeng Pagoda’s lighting or exit through the North Gate.

Connecting with Old Town attractions

From the North Gate, Lijing Gate and Shizi Street are about a 10–15-minute walk away. Sui and Tang Grand Canal Culture Museum is about 1 kilometer away. Walking works well for an evening route. When Old Town roads are congested on public holidays, metro and walking are easier to carry out than a last-minute drive.

Get there

Metro and bus

Take Metro Line 1 to Luoyi Ancient City Station. Exit from Exit A1 and walk about 2 minutes to the North Gate. Bus routes 7, 16, 23 and 57, among others, stop at “Luoyi Ancient City.” Public transport is more suitable for evening visits because of weekend and public-holiday congestion around the Old Town.

Self-driving

The South Gate has a parking lot, but spaces are tight on public holidays. Check nearby shopping-center parking lots at the same time when driving. Select the South Gate or North Gate clearly in navigation, as the two entrances lead to different starting points.

Know before you go

Reservations, photography and spending

The free area also requires a real-name reservation. Complete it before going on weekends and public holidays. The quality and charging methods of travel-photography services vary widely, so compare prices before buying peony cakes, cultural products or other small goods.

Leaving at night

The ancient-city area can remain passable late, but shops, display points and performances each have their own closing time. After a performance, choose the North or South Gate according to the end time, and confirm the metro, bus or taxi arrangements in advance.
