Entrance, reservation and opening hours

Sui and Tang Grand Canal Culture Museum is at No. 171 Jiudu East Road, the Old Town District of Luoyang. Enter through the South Gate. Admission is free, but a real-name reservation through the official WeChat mini program is required. On public holidays, booking 3–7 days in advance is recommended, and the ticket-release time may change. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00, with admission ending at 16:30. It is closed on Mondays, and public-holiday arrangements may change.

How much time to allow

Allow about 1–1.5 hours for a quick visit focusing on the 15-meter-high “Lifeline of the Nation” relief, the Canal No. 1 ancient ship and the interactive exhibition on the third floor. Allow about 2–3 hours to visit all three floors and the viewing platform. The building and galleries are good indoor options for rainy or very hot days.

Architecture and the “Lifeline of the Nation” relief

The exterior walls use Tang sancai ceramic panels, and the dome is made from more than 120,000 sancai ceramic plates, making the architecture a main attraction in its own right. The 15-meter-high “Lifeline of the Nation” relief wall in the first-floor hall is paired with dynamic LED water. View the overall composition from the front or side of the hall.

Ancient ship and canal-transport displays

“Canal No. 1” on the first floor is an approximately 20-meter-long Ming- and Qing-dynasty wooden ship displayed in physical form. The second floor has a reconstructed Sui and Tang wharf scene and ship models. The third-floor interactive exhibition, including “A Grain of Rice’s Journey by Canal,” introduces grain-transport routes through immersive displays and suits families with children.

Who this suits

Visitors interested in architecture, photography, Sui and Tang history or Grand Canal culture can visit all three floors in sequence. Families with children can make the third-floor interactive exhibition a priority. Visitors who mainly want the architecture and ancient ship can complete the route in 1–1.5 hours.

Build your day

1–1.5 hours: Architecture and highlights

Enter through the South Gate and see the “Lifeline of the Nation” relief in the first-floor hall. Then visit the “Canal No. 1” ancient ship and take the spiral staircase upstairs. Finish with “A Grain of Rice’s Journey by Canal” on the third floor, then leave through the exit.

2–3 hours: Complete three-floor route

On the first floor, see the permanent “Vast National Fortune” exhibition, canal excavated artifacts and the ancient ship. Continue to the second floor for the reconstructed Sui and Tang wharf scene and ship models. On the third floor, visit the interactive exhibition and viewing platform before leaving through the South Gate.

Explanations and photography

Public explanations are usually offered in the museum, with a service around 10:00 in the morning possible on some days. Ask about the arrangements after entering. The spiral staircase, dome, relief wall and outdoor pool are specific photography points, while the gallery photography rules still apply indoors.

Get there

Metro and walking

Take Metro Line 1 to Jiamaying Station. Exit from Exit A and walk about 8 minutes; from Exit B, the walk is about 15–20 minutes. Cross the small garden to reach the South Gate. Bus routes 57 and 79, among others, stop nearby. Roads in the Old Town can be congested on weekends and public holidays, so the metro saves time.

Connecting with Luoyi Ancient City

The museum is about one street away from Luoyi Ancient City, a walk of about 10 minutes. Reservations, opening hours and evening activities at the two places are separate and cannot be used interchangeably, so arrange entry under the next attraction’s rules after leaving the museum.

Know before you go

Free does not mean reservation-free

The museum is free to enter, but a real-name reservation is still required. Make the reservation before planning the public-holiday itinerary. The reservation window and ticket-release period may change, so follow the reservation page for the latest arrangement before setting out.

Rest and food

The Luopu Park Urban Balcony opposite the museum has the Chaxu Peony Pavilion, where you can rest and buy drinks such as peony tea. If continuing to Luoyi Ancient City or an Old Town evening visit, use the restroom and arrange drinking water inside the museum before making the walk.
