Plan at a glance
A free mountain walk near Xinyi city
Daren Mountain is in Beiluo Village, Dongzhen, Xinyi. Search for “Xinyi Daren Mountain” or “Daren Mountain Scenic Area”. Only about 3-5 km from the city, it is a developing local mountain area suited to a 1.5-hour easy climb in daylight or a fuller 2-3-hour walk through forest paths and up to the viewpoint.
Reference opening hours are 08:00-17:00. Entry is free and no reservation is needed; parking is also free at both the main gate and the Eight Immortals Temple car park. The visit is about the Eight Immortals Temple, summit views, old trench remains, and woodland paths, rather than polished amusement facilities or an entirely level boardwalk.
Where you park changes the difficulty of the visit
For drivers, set the destination to “Eight Immortals Temple Car Park”. It is closer to the upper mountain and suits visitors with children, older companions, or limited time. Parking at the main gate archway means a longer uphill walk before the stairs even begin, which makes the route noticeably more demanding.
Daren Mountain is different from Tianma Mountain. It is free and close to Xinyi city, but facilities are simpler, so treat it as a half-day mountain walk or a nearby addition to a city stay. Do not expect Tianma Mountain's shuttle system, grassland, or visitor services here.

About 1.5 hours: Eight Immortals Temple to the summit viewpoint
Start from the Eight Immortals Temple car park, spend some time around the temple, then walk through Lover's Corridor to the summit viewpoint before returning by the same route. It is a short route whose main reward is the forest setting and open view, making it suitable for visitors who do not want a long climb. If a downhill sightseeing vehicle is offered that day, confirm that it is running before relying on it for a one-way walk.
Eight Immortals Temple is an active religious space. Keep quiet and avoid blocking worshippers or walkways when taking photographs. The summit viewpoint looks out towards Xinyi city, but sunset need not be the sole objective; stable daytime visibility is also a good reason to complete the route.
2-3 hours: gentler uphill, steep stairs downhill
Visitors who want a longer hike can begin at the main gate archway, follow Trail 2, pass the old trench remains and Eight Immortals Temple, then choose the Thousand-Step Stairway or the Trail 1 direction towards Immortal Cave before reaching the summit viewpoint and descending. Trail 2 is gentler, but some sections are overgrown or lack complete barriers. Trail 1 has steeper stairs and places more demand on knees and young companions.
With preschool-age children, do not treat both routes as ordinary park paths. Keep hold of children and slow down where the trail is enclosed, wet, or has incomplete barriers. If the aim is simply to enjoy the forest, turn back near the temple or viewpoint rather than forcing the steep-stair section.
Build your day
Choose the route from your parking point rather than adding distance halfway through
On arrival, first note whether you have parked by Eight Immortals Temple or the main gate, then choose the easy route or hiking route. The temple car park works well for a direct walk to the viewpoint; from the main gate, use Trail 2 as the main ascent and keep the steeper Trail 1 for visitors whose fitness and knees are both comfortable with it.
The old trench remains can be a brief stop on the way, without repeatedly detouring away from the main route. The section from the summit towards the descent is where fatigue makes slips more likely. It is better to reduce photo stops or side paths and return to the car before dark.
Keep mountain time for the mountain; leave meals and a proper break to the city
There is no toilet at the summit and no dependable shop. Use facilities and refill water at the foot of the mountain or near Eight Immortals Temple before setting off. Carry water, simple food, and repellent so that you are not looking for services on the trail.
Daren Mountain is close to Xinyi city, so it is easier to return to the city for a meal, rest, or old-town walk after the climb than to carry everything uphill. If another mountain is planned that day, allow separately for the drive; the two mountains are not interchangeable short stops.
Daren Mountain suits a short walk near the city. To see grassland and waterfalls with a sightseeing shuttle, leave another day for Xinyi Tianma Mountain Ecotourism Area. The two should not be planned around the same parking or mountain-service expectations, especially not by using Tianma Mountain's shuttle and facilities as a guide to Daren Mountain.
Get there
Taxi or self-drive from Xinyi city; aim for Eight Immortals Temple car park
The journey from Xinyi city is short. A taxi is approximately CNY 15-20. Local buses or shuttle services may reach the area, but departures are limited, so they suit visitors with flexible schedules. Drivers will see signs along the road, and going straight to Eight Immortals Temple car park normally avoids a long uphill approach.
The main gate archway and Eight Immortals Temple lead to different walking starts. Set the navigation destination before leaving, rather than discovering an extra climb after arriving at the foot of the mountain. On holidays, park without blocking the mountain road or temple access.
Visit only in daylight; do not leave unlit mountain paths for the return
The mountain does not have full night lighting, so complete the climb and descent in daylight. Arriving in the morning or early afternoon leaves time to see both the temple and viewpoint without rushing, and avoids wet stairs and poor orientation after dusk.
Non-drivers should agree a return meeting point or leave enough time to book a car before walking uphill. Signal, roads, and transport frequency make late changes harder after dark. Finishing early is the more dependable choice.
Know before you go
This is a local mountain, not a fully equipped urban park
Daren Mountain is free to enter, but summit services are limited and parts of the trails remain quite natural. Do not expect barriers, shops, or level surfaces throughout. Non-slip trainers, water, and mosquito repellent are more useful preparations than extra photo props.
Some rock faces have hand-painted deity images. A small torch can help on darker sections, but do not stop for long on narrow trails. If vegetation blocks the way, the ground is wet, or a barrier is missing, turn around or take another safe route rather than crossing a safety boundary just to complete the trail.
Slow down in religious spaces and on steep stairs
Follow the on-site order at Eight Immortals Temple and do not treat buying incense as a necessary part of the visit. With children, avoid running, climbing, and entering closed areas. When worshippers are present, leave the walkway clear before taking photographs.
The Thousand-Step Stairway and Trail 1 can be hard on knees. If knees are sore, shoe soles are slipping, or the weather is damp, take the short route or return by the way you came. There is no toilet higher up the mountain, so prepare before starting rather than rushing on the descent.
