Plan at a glance
A mountain day built around grassland and waterfalls
Tianma Mountain is in Wangjiang Village, Beijie Town, Xinyi. Search for “Xinyi Tianma Mountain Ecotourism Area”. Its main sights are spread between highland grassland, forest waterfalls, and higher viewpoints, so it suits visitors willing to allow time for mountain roads, walking, and shuttle transfers. A relaxed visit takes about 2-3 hours; the full hiking route needs 6-7 hours.
The park is open 08:00-17:00, with last entry at 16:00 and the last sightseeing shuttle at 16:30. Adult admission is approximately CNY 50-60; the sightseeing shuttle is approximately CNY 20 one way or CNY 30 return. The cable car, mountain slide, and other activities cost extra, so choose according to the route you actually plan to take rather than trying to add every activity to one visit.
The grassland can stand alone; the hiking route needs a full fitness budget
If the goal is the highland grassland, lone tree, wind turbines, and Tianchi viewpoint, take the sightseeing shuttle uphill. These areas are not a short walk from the entrance. Conditions on the mountain vary with cloud, rain, and visibility. The grassland and waterfalls are worthwhile, but do not build the day around one particular weather effect appearing on demand.
On weekends and public holidays, online tickets may still need to be exchanged for paper tickets on site. Arriving in the morning or early afternoon leaves time for ticket collection, the journey uphill, and the return, without having to rush for the final shuttle.

2-3 hours: take the shuttle to the grassland, then visit Tianchi viewpoint
For a short visit, for families with older or younger companions, or for anyone who wants the easier option, take the shuttle from the visitor centre to Grassland Station. Visit the highland grassland, lone tree, and wind turbines, then continue to Tianchi viewpoint before returning by shuttle. This puts the open mountain views first, while everyone still has energy, and avoids a long uphill and downhill walk.
Some grassland areas have grazing cattle, uneven ground, and muddy patches. Stay on the established paths when walking or taking photographs; there is no need to cross the grass just to reach one angle. The summit can be windy, so even on the short route bring water, sun protection, and a light outer layer.
6-7 hours: a full hike through waterfalls, gorge, and grassland
With enough time and fitness, start at the park entrance and continue through the Guangdong-Guangxi Border Waterfall, Butterfly Valley Waterfall, Miao Village Square, and One-Line Sky Gorge, then climb to Tianma Mountain Grassland and the Guangdong-Guangxi boundary marker. Return downhill by sightseeing shuttle or cable car. This is a continuous mountain route for visitors comfortable with steps, loose stone, and wet surfaces.
For families who only want water play and a picnic, keep the visit around the shallow stream in Butterfly Valley and the camping area near the waterfall rather than continuing uphill. In prolonged rain, changing water levels, or slippery trail conditions, shorten the route and follow on-site safety guidance.
Build your day
Decide first between the grassland route and the waterfall-to-summit hike
At the visitor centre, choose the route according to fitness, weather, and the final shuttle time. Visitors taking the grassland short route should board the shuttle first, then divide their time between the grassland, wind turbines, and Tianchi. Visitors hiking the full route should begin with the waterfalls and gorge, keeping the climb in the first half of the day rather than entering a long descent late in the afternoon.
The lone tree, turbines, and Tianchi viewpoint work best for open views, while waterfall viewpoints commonly have wet rock and spray. One or two stops at each are enough; avoid repeated backtracking. When cloud thickens or light starts to fade, prioritise the return over another photograph.
Put food and the return journey into the plan, not into last-minute decisions on the mountain
There are few shops in the park, and some food outlets primarily serve tour groups. Food around Miao Village is also limited. Bring enough drinking water, snacks, and simple picnic supplies so that lunch does not interrupt the route; on a half-day visit, having a proper meal before entering the mountains is often easier.
Whether returning by shuttle, cable car, or on foot, allow for the 16:30 final shuttle. Drivers in particular should not leave the winding mountain road until full darkness. It is better to skip one viewpoint than to make the descent hurried or uncertain.
The grassland and waterfall routes at Xinyi Tianma Mountain Ecotourism Area need a sightseeing shuttle or a substantial mountain-time commitment. For a shorter ascent close to Xinyi city, Daren Mountain Scenic Area is a better separate half-day option. Their transport, facilities, and walking intensity differ, so Daren Mountain is not a simplified entrance to Tianma Mountain.
Get there
Drive to the park entrance and treat the mountain road as part of the trip
Driving from the Pearl River Delta takes about 3-4 hours. After leaving the expressway, a section known as the “18 Bends” has frequent tight turns and limited passing space. New drivers, low-clearance cars, and passengers prone to motion sickness should allow extra time and travel slowly. Free parking is available near the park entrance, from where you can start the selected route.
The many bends need more care after rain or when visibility falls in the evening. Build driving, parking, and the descent into the day rather than giving all the time to the grassland and waterfalls. Use the road cautiously when meeting oncoming vehicles; do not treat the mountain road as a place to make up time.
Public transport still leaves a mountain transfer after reaching Xinyi
From Xinyi Railway Station, a taxi to the park takes about one hour. Another option is to reach Xinyi from Maoming and arrange a private car for the mountain section. Public transport in the mountains is limited, so non-drivers should settle the return vehicle, latest departure time, and group size before setting out.
If you need to return to Xinyi city or connect with onward transport that day, do not place the final shuttle or final mountain-road section immediately before a tight departure. Tianma Mountain works better as a half-day or full-day mountain outing than as a rushed addition to several city appointments with fixed times.
Know before you go
The summit is cooler than the city; shoes and a layer matter more than photo gear
The summit is usually 5-8 degrees Celsius cooler than the city, with a bigger difference in strong wind. Bring a light layer even in summer. Waterfalls, steps, and loose-stone paths can be slippery after rain, so non-slip trainers are the practical choice. Hikers on the full route may bring trekking poles, but equipment does not replace sound judgement about weather and fitness.
Mosquitoes, cattle activity, and local muddy ground are normal parts of the grassland setting. Repellent, water, and spare socks are more useful than trying to buy them later. If the weather deteriorates, visibility drops, or anyone feels unwell, finish on the grassland short route or at a lower level rather than forcing the summit.
Tickets, activities, and supplies each have their own limits
Admission and the sightseeing shuttle cover entry and transport. The cable car, slide, and other activities are separate choices, and their availability can vary on the day. Choose the core route first, then decide whether to add an activity; this is usually easier than queuing for each one after entering.
Supplies and meal choices on the mountain are limited. Eating after leaving the park, in Xinyi city or another nearby town, is the more dependable option. Keep water, snacks, tissues, rain gear, and a rubbish bag in the car or daypack to avoid searching for supplies or backtracking in the mountains.
