District and entrances
Jiangbei Old Street covers the old northern part of Meijiang District. Its main areas include Lingfeng West Road, Youluo Street and Zhongyuan West Road. Common entrances are the south square at the Jiaying Ancient City archway and the Lingfeng West Road pedestrian-street entrance. Searching for Bajia Pavilion or Meizhou Academy is also useful.
The street area is free and open for walking all day. Shops, restaurants and indoor venues keep their own hours, and some may not be fully open early in the day. For food, street life and the evening lights, plan the main visit from afternoon into early evening.
Suggested time and walking pace
A quick food-and-street visit takes around 1.5–2 hours and suits visitors who want the arcades and a few snacks. Adding Meizhou Academy, the former qiaopi (overseas-Chinese remittance-letter) office site, Meijiang Bridge and a full meal usually takes 3–4 hours. Walk through the area rather than driving into the lanes.

Arcades and old lanes
Lingfeng West Road has a continuous stretch of arcades, with exposed brick, column details and old shopfronts to look at during the day. After the lights come on, the arcade corners and Bajia Pavilion are better for night photography, but traffic, bicycles and pedestrians also increase.
Hakka snacks on Youluo Street
Youluo Street is one of the old city's main snack areas. Try Hakka noodles, Sanjidi soup, bamboo-shoot rice cakes, fried rice cakes, handmade meatballs and xianren jelly. Shops differ in hours, portions and prices, so look at the menu and queue before choosing; you do not need to seek out the most famous shops.
Meizhou Academy and river views
Meizhou Academy has red walls, old trees and traditional architectural details, and works well as part of an arcade walk. Bajia Pavilion, Meijiang Bridge and some old-street corners offer different city views. Photographers may want to walk the main lanes again after the afternoon light softens.
Build your day
A 1.5–2-hour food-and-street route
Enter from the south square at the Jiaying Ancient City archway, follow Lingfeng West Road to see the arcades, turn into Youluo Street for snacks, and finish near Bajia Pavilion. The route is not long, but some lanes have stone paving and limited space, so wear non-slip flat shoes.
Look at the buildings during the day, then return to Youluo Street for dinner in the evening. This avoids the quietest shop hours and leaves the lit arcades for the final part of the walk.
A 3–4-hour historic old-town route
Start at Meizhou Academy, continue through Jiaying Ancient City Impression Hall, Lingfeng Road and Youluo Street, then walk to the former qiaopi (overseas-Chinese remittance-letter) office site and Meijiang Bridge. Finish with a meal around Zhongyuan West Road or the old street, and leave through the outer roads.
Indoor venues may follow different hours from the open street. If one is closed during the midday or evening period, use the time for the arcades and riverside walk instead of making repeated detours.
A full-day city culture route
Visit China Hakka Museum and Dongshan Academy in the morning, spend the afternoon eating and walking around Jiangbei Old Street, then go to Meizhou Thousand Buddha Pagoda in the evening for city views. These stops require walking, cycling or short drives between them, so decide where to park before setting out rather than treating them as one continuous walking route.
Get there
Taxi, bus and shared electric bicycles
A taxi to Bajia Pavilion or Meizhou Academy will put you close to the main street area. Shared electric bicycles are also convenient on the outer roads. Buses stop near the old town, but you will still need to walk into the arcade area; watch for vehicles and pedestrians when returning at night.
Driving and parking
If driving, search for Huaqiao Theatre Car Park. Short-term parking usually has a free period, but follow the signs on site. You can also park outside Zhongyuan West Road and walk in. Parking inside the old street is limited and the lanes are narrow, so do not drive into the core area just to get close to a particular shop.
Know before you go
Shop hours and street expectations
The street can be open all day while individual businesses are closed. Some shops do not start opening until the afternoon, so an early visit may feel quiet. For food, street activity and the lights, afternoon into early evening is the better window.
Paving, traffic and eating
Some sections have stone paving, and bicycles and motor vehicles may enter the outer roads. Wear flat shoes with good grip and watch for traffic; bring sun protection in summer. There are many snack choices, but portions, prices and quality vary, so check the menu and price before ordering.
