Plan at a glance
Choosing Gate 3 or Gate 5
Gate 3 is close to Muxuyuan Station on Metro Line 2. Yanque Lake and Changsheng Deer Park are near the entrance, making it the better choice for public transport and a complete walk along the Sacred Way. Gate 5 is closer to the main landscape and the start of Shixiang Road, so it suits visitors who want to go directly to the core area or continue to Meiling Palace.
Allow about 1.5 hours for the short route and 2–3 hours for the complete route. The site is large and tiring on foot; use the sightseeing bus if you want to reduce long transfers or save energy.
Tickets and hours
Adult admission is about CNY 70. Children aged 6–18 and full-time students at undergraduate level or below can usually buy a half-price ticket of about CNY 35 with valid documents; postgraduate students are not included in this half-price category. Visitors aged 70 and above, children under 1.4 metres and active-duty military personnel usually qualify for free admission.
The usual hours are 06:30–18:30 from February to November and 07:00–17:30 from December to January. Entering before 06:30 or after 18:30 may qualify for free main-gate admission, but internal attractions follow their own rules.

Shixiang Road and Wengzhong Road
Shixiang Road, the Sacred Way, is lined with stone lions, xiezhi, camels, elephants, qilin and horses. Wengzhong Road has pairs of civil and military stone figures, making it useful for understanding the layout and ceremonial order of an imperial tomb.
Early morning or late afternoon light works well for the stone animals, old trees and Sacred Way. Visitors interested in historic architecture can slow down here; visitors who only want the main route can walk from Gate 3 to Gate 5.
Fangcheng Ming Tower and the tomb area
Fangcheng Ming Tower is a major structure in the tomb complex and offers distant views over the mausoleum grounds and Purple Mountain. The Stele Pavilion, the former Hall of Enjoyment site and the distant view of the Bao Ding fit into a 2–3 hour complete route.
The footbridge near Gate 5 overlooks Wutong Avenue and the entrance to Shixiang Road. It works well if you want to combine Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum with Meiling Palace on the same day; follow the pedestrian flow and do not stop on the bridge or stairs for too long.
Build your day
A 1.5-hour short route
Enter through Gate 3, follow Shixiang Road, Wengzhong Road and Wenwu Fang Gate, view Fangcheng Ming Tower from outside and leave through Gate 5. This route has little backtracking and suits first-time visitors who also want to continue to Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum or Meiling Palace.
Before leaving, confirm the day’s traffic and pedestrian arrangements at Gates 3 and 5. If you enter through Gate 3 early, add Yanque Lake and Changsheng Deer Park before moving along the Sacred Way.
A 2–3 hour complete route
Enter through Gate 3 and follow Yanque Lake, Changsheng Deer Park, Shixiang Road, Wengzhong Road, Wenwu Fang Gate, the Stele Pavilion, the former Hall of Enjoyment site and Fangcheng Ming Tower, with a distant view of the Bao Ding before leaving through Gate 5. Climbing Fangcheng Ming Tower adds more steps, so decide according to your energy.
After Gate 5, walk about 10–15 minutes to Meiling Palace or take one sightseeing-bus stop. Reaching Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum requires another transfer, so include the waiting time.
Get there
Public transport to Gate 3
Take Metro Line 2 to Muxuyuan Station, Exit 1, and walk about 5–10 minutes to Gate 3. This is the easiest approach for visitors who are not driving and want to enter along the Sacred Way.
Gate 5 can be entered as a navigation destination, but traffic restrictions may apply nearby after 07:00, so a car may not be able to reach the gate itself. If you take a taxi or drive, confirm the drop-off point before walking in.
Sightseeing bus and parking
The sightseeing bus costs about CNY 10 for one ride or CNY 30 for unlimited rides on the day, with stops at the main attractions and metro stations. Traffic controls may apply from 09:00–17:00 on weekdays and 08:30–17:30 on weekends and holidays; drivers should park outside the controlled area and transfer.
Qianxian Dayuan car park is one parking reference, at about CNY 2 per hour. Holiday spaces and transfer times can increase, so public transport is usually easier for a fixed schedule.
Know before you go
Half-price rules and free-entry windows
Postgraduate students are not included in the half-price ticket category. Visitors who qualify for free entry should still reserve a zero-yuan ticket through the Zhongshan Mountain Scenic Area WeChat mini-program if the day’s entry process requires it.
Entering before 06:30 or after 18:30 may make the main gate free, but Shixiang Road, Fangcheng Ming Tower and other internal sites may still follow their own ticket rules. If you plan to use the early period to avoid crowds, confirm the open gate and ticket arrangement first.
Walking, guiding and food
The site is large, with stone paths and steps, so wear comfortable shoes and carry enough water. Food choices inside are limited and can be expensive; prepare a small snack or eat in the wider Zhongshan Mountain area after leaving.
Self-guided audio devices may have technical problems. A mobile audio guide or staff-led service at the entrance may be easier to use at your own pace. Do not use unofficial vehicles around the site; choose the official sightseeing bus or a licensed taxi.
